A pleasant awakening

Your eyes open slowly, and the sight in front of you confirms that last night wasn't just a good dream. Katherine is lying with her head on your chest, sleeping peacefully. You don't want to wake her, so you simply watch her, listening to her breathe softly in and out. You missed this so much. It's been months since you last held her, and now you don't know if you can. She mentioned this was only a one night thing, but you don't know if you can take losing her again. You'll do anything to have her back. As you're thinking, Katherine wakes up and smiles at you. You lean down and kiss her.

"Hey, Katherine?"

"Yes?"

"How did you get in here last night?"

"The spare key under the mat. Very cliché. You're lucky I am the only person who broke in."

You both chuckle at her joke. Soon the laughing dies down and you simply stare at each other, searching for the words to say.

"I missed this," you finally tell her.

"Me too. I wish we could stay like this."

"Why can't we?"

"James, I can't. That feeling when I found out what you did, like my heart was falling apart. I can't go through that again."

"You won't have to Katherine, I promise you. I'll do whatever it takes to show you that I have changed. I'll never betray you again."

"If Bridgette didn't tell me what happened, would you have?"

"Honestly, yes, I would have. I'm not just saying that. I felt like shit after it happened, the only thing I cared about was us. I rushed home to confess. I wanted you to know that what I had done, and how sorry and disgusted I was with myself. I never got that chance. Please, just give me a chance to show you that I changed. I know I said in the voicemail that I was far from the person you deserved. Holding you now, I realize that I can be that person, and I want nothing more to be that person. Just please give me a chance."

"So what, James? You want me to just remarry you, pretend that these past few months never happened?"

"No, we don't need to remarry right away, we can give it a trial run. We'll live together again and you can see how much I care about you. I'll do anything to show you that I'm serious now. Please, Katherine. You have no reason to, but I'm begging you to trust me."
