A pair of red sport shoes?

As Jade walked to the doorstep, she noticed yet another thing out of the ordinary.

Not that the footwear was placed outside the house, though that may be unusual to some people. Jade’s mother was a bit of a neat freak, and so she insisted that no shoes or other footwear used to walk outside be worn inside the house. As a result, the Wilders usually placed their shoes beside the front door.

The black pair of shoes that her mother usually wore out was there, yes. That wasn’t unusual, she’d clearly come back home after finishing her errands. No, what was unusual was the pair of red sports shoes next to her mom’s shoes!

Those did not belong to her. In fact, it did not belong to anyone in her family! She had seen them before, though; earlier today, she remembered seeing them in a white van, the red shoes on her ex-boyfriend’s feet as he drilled a woman into submission...
