A little push
The morning sunlight filtered through the blinds of Kalvin’s cramped dorm room, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Nikki sat on the edge of his unmade bed, her hands twisting nervously in her lap. She felt small, as she usually did, her petite frame practically swallowed by the oversized hoodie she wore to hide her figure.
"It was just… a lot, Kalvin," Nikki whispered, her eyes fixed on a spot on the carpet. She traced the hem of her sleeve with a plump lip tucked between her teeth. "He’s so... much." Her mind still thinking about his size "Everything about him is just so much."
Kalvin sat in his desk chair, his glasses catching the light. He watched her with a calm, analytical intensity, his hands resting in his lap, hidden from view. He knew exactly what she was talking about. He had spent hours imagining the scene: Marcus, with his towering, athletic build, pressing Nikki against a wall, his massive presence overwhelming her delicate, porcelain frame.
"So you kissed him?" Kalvin asked, his voice steady.
"Yeah," she breathed, a faint blush creeping up her neck. "He’s very… focused. When he looks at me, I feel like I’m the only person in the room. But when things started to get, you know, physical… I got scared. I didn’t know what to do with my hands. I didn't know how to handle how big he was against me."
She looked up at him, seeking the comfort she had found since childhood, but Kalvin’s expression held an unfamiliar glint—something that felt less like protection and more like anticipation.
"Nikki," Kalvin said, his tone unusually firm. "You’ve spent your whole life being shy, hiding away from everything that makes you feel alive. Marcus is a good man. He’s kind, he’s patient, and he’s clearly crazy about you. You’re eighteen. You’re allowed to have fun."
"I don’t know if I’m ready for that," she murmured, her shoulders hunched.
"It's not about being ready," Kalvin countered, his voice dropping to a persuasive lower register. "You just have to stop running. Why fight how you feel? You like him, don't you?"
Nikki looked away, her heart beat quickening. Admitting it felt like opening a door she wasn't sure she could close. "I do. But it’s all so intense."
"Then let it be intense," Kalvin said, leaning forward. "Don't overthink the mechanics of it. Don't worry about being 'good'. Just go on the third date. Let go of the control for once. See what happens when you just let him lead."
Nikki sat in silence for a long time, the weight of his words pressing down on her. She trusted Kalvin more than anyone in the world. If he thought she was capable of handling Marcus—of handling the sheer, daunting reality of him—then maybe she was.
"You really think I should?" she asked, her voice small.
"I think you deserve to find out what it feels like to be wanted by someone like him," Kalvin said, a strange, secret smile touching his lips. "Go on the date, Nikki. Let him take care of you."
"Ok." Nikki sighed. "I'll try."
