A day in the camp
(From here we’re switching to third person narration)
Carter strode across the compound towards the mess tent. Strode as well He could in heels and mud.
It had been raining again, for a good couple of days. With their luck, they’d have to pull up everything to avoid being washed away in a flood.
The food was it’s bland usual self. The women avoided him due to their superiority complex and the nurses for fear the women would give them a hard time.
Carter didn’t mind it that much. The chatter stopped as the door swung open.
“Ten hut!” A voice called, and everyone in the room stood.
Major North stepped in “at ease girls.” She said, before walking over to Carter.
“Miss Woods” she began “if you’re done eating I need you to come with me.”
Carter resented the fact that she never addressed him as Doctor or his equivalent rank of Captain. It was always something degrading to remind him he was a boy in a woman’s world.
But, ever the diligent to his work, he followed the CO out to the post op ward.
“Dr. Berry pulled four bullets out of this poor kid yesterday.” The major said quietly, looking at a young woman lying on a bed nearby.
“Anything serious?” Carter asked
“No, but she’s putting up a blank wall. Barely said a word. You dames always know how to get a woman out of a funk, get her back on her feet.”
“Sir, with all due respect... is she even 18? If you told me she was in 8th grade I’d believe you.”
“According to everything we can get on her, she’s 20.”
“Major...“ he began to say before simply saying “I’ll give it a shot...”
“That’s the spirt!” She said as she walked out.
“Things I do for a pay check around her...” Carter muttered as he walked over to the girl.
“Hi there.” Carter said sweetly as he said down next to her. “My name is Dr. Woods. I was told you might need my help.”
The girl opened her eyes and looked him over.
“Did I die?” She asked
“No, not that I’m aware.”
“I... I thought you were a goddess. The light behind you...”
Carter turned his head, and adjusted the lamp behind him.
“Can you see me better now?”
“Yes.” She said “ but it didn’t do much, you still look like a dream.”
“The others tell me you need my help, do you want to tell me what’s wrong?”
What’s her story?
