Chapter 4 by RadioGalaxy RadioGalaxy

What awaits them on the other side?

A city of magic.

The ravine ran in a massive circle, completely bordering a pillar of rock and earth that was miles wide, and farther down than the surrounding cliffs, making it look like it had sunk slightly into the abyss. Atop the insanely big pillar stood a city, a city of stone and wood, all masses of intricate architecture and design, making each building look rich and mystical in a way. The entirety of the city was ringed in a gigantic wall standing at the edge of the bottomless precipice. In each of the cardinal directions stood an incredibly intricate gate, from which a massive stone bridge spread between the wall and the opposite edge of the crevasse. The bridges were all identical to the one at which Jack and Avendra stood. Five structures stood out from the surrounding city blocks and various districts.

The first, was an enormous cathedral, larger than any he had seen online back on his original world. It was made up of many bell towers and the central chapel building all topped with spires and statues of gods. On every surface of the all white stone building were huge stained glass mosaic windows depicting various deitys and prophets. The main chapel came up to a huge bell tower, where a bell bigger than a house hung, surrounded by many smaller bells the size of a person. Around the back, there was a very large and dark graveyard that seemed to be the only place in the city entirely devoid of life and color.

Secondly, A huge rectangular building that was made of the same rich, warm wood and stones of the surrounding houses and shops dominated several city blocks. It was at least six or seven stories tall and dwarfed all of the surrounding structures. Right next to it was an all stone brick building that looked a lot like a barracks, it was only a fourth the size of the rectangular building but that meant it was still huge. The biggest thing of note about these builds though was a longsword that stuck out of the ground in a plaza before them. It was at least four stories high and the blade was made of a greenish-blue metal that resembled jade, capped with a hilt and guard of some black substance that looked like polished obsidian. There were signs and designs on both buildings but they couldn't be seen from this distance.

The third, was huge dome of a structure that was made entirely of metal and glass. Many thousands of very intricate pieces of metal all intertwined forming a sort of spiderweb lid. Inbetween the many gaps light green glass had been set, making the entire dome appear very much like the wings of some undescribably big insect curled around itself. Jack could only hope to guess at what it was but it seemed to him like some sort of crazily designed amphitheatre. It sparkled magnificently in the midday sun and he could not see inside.

The fourth was a less of a single structure like the others and more a compund of sorts. It consisted of several main buildings all arranged in a circle around a plaza where a very large fountain made up of differently elevated floating crystal pieces all circulating around a central crystal basin all spouting water in different directions to create a floating orb of water suspended in the middle of it all. Many gardens and smaller plazas as well as hallways and small houses and other buildings also dotted the complex, giving it all a very mystical feel even compared to many of the other places in the city. Jack could only guess that this was the academy Avendra had mentioned.

The fifth building was the most imposing by far. Dead centre of the city stood a tower so high that were it not the middle of the day it would cast a shadow so long it would spill past the city and over the forrest. It was so tall even from their elevated position Jack could not see the top, and it lead far overhead and into the clouds. The entire building was comprised of some black stone seen nowhere else in the city, and dotted all along it all the way to the top were huge vents covered only with thick, dark iron bars. From several of these poured smokes of all different colors, making many rainbow trails at different heights up the tower.

Avendra, seeing Jack's awed expression, grinned broadly and spread her arms wide to indicate the whole city. "Welcome to Sard, Jack."

First order of business?
