A certain Avatar objects

No sooner had the words left his mouth that a new voice rang out, this time from behind Sokka. "Hey! That's my line!", it said.

Turning around, Sokka was surprised to see a young woman standing there... about his own age, brown hair, brown skin, blue eyes and those clothes... she was definitely Water Tribe. And a cutie to boot. Sokka just couldn't help himself. "Oh, hey there, good-looking. You, uh... come here often?", he greeted her with a grin.

But the girl looked uncertain, all of a sudden. "My name's Korra. I'm the... I'm... I'm supposed to be the Avatar?", she half-asserted, half-asked. "I don't really remember, but...", she trailed off, looking around at the assembled Avatars, confused, looking for an answer nobody could really give her.

Even Roku seemed bewildered by her presence. "You don't seem sure of that. I don't know you. But the fact that you are here, where only Avatars should be, proves your claim.", he agreed with her assertions.

But Sokka was now completely lost. "Wait, wait... you guys don't know her? But she's an Avatar too?", he asked, trying to make sense of it all. Well, the fact that she had to be an Avatar because she was here made sense to him... but where did she even come from if none of the past Avatars recognized her?

"This plane is disconnected from both the spiritual and physical plane. It appears your reckless wish to become the Avatar even caused time to become disjointed from it. I can only assume that this young girl is the one who was meant to become the next Avatar after Aang here.", the Air Nomad Avatar theorized. "And thanks to your meddling... now her future is no more.", she concluded, fixing Sokka with yet another disapproving glare.

"Oh.", Sokka said simply. So now he was down two lives already. Both Aang and Korra had been negatively affected with a single wish. And he couldn't just reverse what he had done, but simply leaving them like this, robbed of their lives... that didn't sit right with him. And he had the power to correct this, he just... needed to figure out how. "I'll make this right, I promise. I don't know how yet, but I'll make this up to you. To you both. And I'll become the Avatar I need to be.", he vowed, to both victims of his selfish wish and the other Avatars. From now on, he would only make selfless wishes... well, mostly, he amended to himself when he thought of Kataras breasts. Surely there would be no harm in that if his sister... aided him some more in the future, right?

Fortunately, his past lives couldn't read his mind. "Good. Because it seems you have a long road ahead of you. You have no bending skills whatsoever, so you have to learn quickly. First, an Avatar should learn the element of their nation first. So for you, this means finding a waterbending teacher.", the Earth Kingdom Avatar sternly (and rather unkindly) instructed him.

That made sense to Sokka, waterbending ought to be the easiest to learn, right? After all, if Katara was able to pick it up without a teacher, it should be a breeze for the Avatar. "Okay, but where am I supposed to find one?", he asked. Thanks to the Fire Nation, there were none left in the Southern Water Tribe and the Northern Water Tribe was half a world away...

Unfortunately, his past lives were less than helpful in this regard. "That's something you'll have to figure out yourself. We can only see the world through our reincarnations and after Aang here, everything we can tell you is over a hundred years removed from the present.", she explained. In other words, useless. "This is the task you wished for. Now get to it, Avatar Sokka!", she finished, her voice dripping with sarcasm and barely veiled contempt.

"Though our knowledge of the world may be outdated, if there is something else you need to learn about the other sides of an Avatars mission, call upon us, Sokka.", Roku chimed in. "There is more to the world that the naked eye can see. Always remember that.", were the parting words of the old Avatar before Sokka felt a pulling sensation and with a gasp, he awoke, looking into the expectant faces of his sister and grandmother.

"Did it work? Did you see the other Avatars?", Katara asked eagerly.

"I did...", Sokka said and began telling his sister and grandmother what his mission was, though he was careful not to mention Aang or Korra to them. After he was finished, Kataras eyes were wide with excitement. Sokka could even detect a hint of pride in her smile, he was sure she was happy that she'd been able to help the Avatar after all, though she'd never tell their grandmother.

Gran Gran meanwhile nodded sadly. "I see... so this means... you'll be leaving, then.", she said simply.

"Looks like I'll have to.", Sokka agreed slowly. It was only now that he saw the saddened face of his grandmother that the implications truly sank in for him. He'd have to leave home, leave everyone he'd ever known behind, leave them alone and unguarded... this Avatar business was going to be tougher than he imagined...
