Chapter 9
by deathofcards
What is the one thing?
5th Street?
Tim stands in front of you with a puzzled look on his face. He’s leaning forward on his elbows on the counter top. Tim has a look like he’s trying really hard to remember something, which should be as easy as his mother’s birthday. Casually you slip the cigarette packet from your pocket and light one up. You inhale slowly, the smoke barely causes any effect when it hits your lungs suggesting to you that you’ve been smoking for quite some time. Tim’s eyes light up as if burning with recognition.
“That’s it! A couple of times you mentioned some guy called Diego. No I don’t think it was, what a minute now what was it,” Tim says trying to recall the name.
“It’s ok Tim, take you’re time,” you tell him, trying to take off some of the pressure.
“No, that was it. He was called Diego. You mentioned him a couple of times.”
“Thanks Tim. What exactly did I mention about this Diego fellow?” you ask.
“Not too much, there was something about an address on 5th street,” Tim tells you.
For a moment you are lost in thoughts, trying to remember this Diego character and your connection to him. The door swings open behind you, sending cool air into the bar and breaking you out of your thoughts. Your instincts take over, as you quickly turn around to face whoever it is at the door. A blonde young woman steps in. She’s dressed in a figure hugging green dress. You quietly observe her and then turn back to Tim.
“Have you got a phone directory?” you ask.
“Yeah, there’s one in the office. I’ll just go get it. Can you look after the bar for a few minutes,” Tim replies.
Tim heads off to his office and you get up and jump over the counter top of the bar. The young woman starts to walk towards you, stopping where you were just moments before.
“Hi, can I get a beer?” She asks in a sexy southern voice.
You turn around and get a beer out of the fridge, opening it and then passing it back to you. She smiles and passes you a ten dollar note.
“You can keep the change honey,” she tells you.
You notice that she appears to be checking you out. Taking occasional glances at you between sips.
“So what brings you here?” you ask, trying to invoke a conversation.
“I’m just in town for a few days on business. I needed a drink and this was the closest bar," she tells you.
“I’m Kaitlyn. What’s you name sugar?” she asks.
If only you knew. “John. Nice to meet you, Kaitlyn,” you say shooting here a smile.
“You don't mind if I ask, what time do you finish work John?” Kaitlyn asks.
You’re a little shocked that a woman you’ve only just met is coming onto you so fast, you can’t help feeling a little paranoid. You put the feelings of insecurity from your mind, as she looks harmless enough.
“Well actually any minute now as I don’t really work here. I’m just minding the bar for a few minutes,” you answer.
Kaitlyn giggles. From behind, you hear Tim returning to the bar. In his hands he’s carrying a dog eared phone directory. Tim drops it onto the bar in front of you and goes back to work behind the bar. You jump back over the bar and take a seat next to Kaitlyn. You start to flick through the phone directory. It takes you a few minutes but you eventually find some listing for a Diego. A business called Intimate Images on a 105th street.
As it’s fairly late you wonder if you should check it out in the morning. After all you could spend some time talking with Kaitlyn. Diego’s name has you burning with curiosity and you’re **** to get to the bottom of this mystery but the alluring blonde next to you also has your attention piqued.
What are you going to do?
