More about Terra Feralis

[Time keeping]

A Terra Feralis year (TFY) consists of 360 days divided into four periods of 90 days formally known as solaras which are further subdivided into periods of 30 days formally known as lunaras. The terms solara and lunara trace their origin back to the Early Days when people wanted to organize time based on the events in nature. So is solara based on the progression of the Terra Feralis primary star Stella Feralis, aka Sol, through the sky and lunara is in a similar way based on the progression of Terra Feralis' companion Luna through the sky. A lunara is further subdivided into two quinzara — a portmanteau of the ancient quindecim and lunara — of 15 days formally known as quinzara increment (waxing Luna) and quinzara decrement (waning Luna) abbreviated to QZI and QZD. During the course of time many attempts were made to find fitting terms based on the same principle of using events in nature to further subdivide time, but eventually society settled on the more practical terms of hour, year, and day. A day is further subdivided into 2 periods of 12 hours formally know as Ante Meridien and Post Meridien abbreviated to a.m and p.m. Although some prefer to use a 24h scheme primarily to avoid confusion between midday 12h00 and midnight 00h00. The most commonly know practice today is to use the solara day-count (since the start of a 90 day period) and to start the hour-count since midnight.

  • Solara
Day   Solara   Start Day Name
1 Waxing Lengthening (Short Sun)
90 Diei Aurora Dies Aurora (Equal Sun)
180 Diei Feralis Apex (Long Sun)
270 Waning Dies Feralis (Equal Sun)

  • Lunara
Day   Solara   Lunara   Lunara name
1 Waxing 1 Lunara of the Evergreens (Short Sun)
30 2 Lunara of Crafting
60 3 Lunara of Storytelling
90 Diei Aurora 1 Lunara of Stirrings (Equal Sun)
120 2 Lunara of Arriving Wings
150 3 Lunara of Mating
180 Diei Feralis 1 Lunara of the Long Days (Long Sun)
210 2 Lunara of Gathering
240 3 Lunara of Naming
270 Waning 1 Lunara of Parting Wings (Equal Sun)
300 2 Lunara of the Falling Leaves
330 3 Lunara of the Short Days

Nowadays the lunaras don’t have a formal or official naming scheme. Above is a version of a lunara naming scheme for a calendar of the northern hemisphere going back to the Early Days to name the lunaras.

  • Quinzara
Day   Quinzara   Quinzara Day Name
1 Increment (waxing Luna) Primeday

23 Octaday
24 Nineday
25 Decaday
26 Terraday
27 Acquaday
28 Aerday
29 Ignisday
30 Lupusday

Nowadays the last five days of a quinzara are sometimes also referred to as the Lupus days.

  • Financial Calendar

Once upon a time, the lunaras were more important. When the scope of society reached no further than the surrounding regions and cross-continental travel was a real undertaking and thus was a rare event, it was easy to maintain and employ a lunara based base calendar scheme to organize time. But the greater the distance between two places the greater the discrepancy between the original meaning of a date notation — the one used at your hometown— and the meaning of the local date notation. As society progressed and technology made long-distance travel and communications more commonplace the need arose to unambiguously determine a date. And so the lunara based calendar scheme got depreciated in favor of a quinzara based scheme that is now used for business around the world.

Day  Solara Quinzara Letter Solara Quinzara Letter
1 Waxing   Increment A Diei Aurora Increment G
15 Decrement B Decrement H
30 Increment C Increment J
45 Decrement D Decrement K
60 Increment E Increment L
75 Decrement F Decrement M
Day  Solara Quinzara Letter Solara Quinzara Letter
1 Diei Feralis  ‎ Increment N Waning Increment T
15 Decrement O Decrement U
30 Increment P Increment V
45 Decrement Q Decrement W
60 Increment R Increment X
75 Decrement S Decrement Y

Basically A3 or A Tertday should suffice to unambiguously determine a date. But if you want to emphasize you're using Quinzara Letters you could use the form Quinzara A3 or Quinzara A Tertday or abbreviated to QA3 or QA Tertday.

Due to the efficiency and simplicity of pinpointing a date the financial calendar is the preferred scheme for personal agendas and planners.

However, lunara-based calendars are still quite common in regular households. Since the year is divided so evenly that the same calendar can be used every year, the household calendar is treated as a work of art. So artists created various lunara naming schemes for calendars. Publishers would then release calendars based on these schemes, catering to every taste even those who like no-named lunaras.
