"When we rounded up the usual suspects," Captain Renault said to Rick, "Ugarte was on the list. The team went to pick him up found him packing, getting ready to skip town. On top of that... He was wearing an expensive gold watch."

"With no sales receipt?" Rick ventured.

Captain Renault shook his head, "He never does. I was pretty sure we had found our man. Since he was skipping town, that explained why he left the passport behind. Why risk being picked up with it in his possession? And if he was leaving Casablanca immediately, he would be unable to sell it before he left."

Rick nodded; all the pieces fit.

"But then one of my Detectives suggested that just to be on the safe side, we should check recent robbery complaints," Captain Renault continued. "One complaint turned up with a wrist watch listed as one of the items stolen... We called in the plaintiff. He was able to provide enough details without us showing him the watch to prove that it was his..."

"Your case fell apart?" Rick followed where Captain Renault was going.

"Our case fell apart," Captain Renault repeated. Then, he grinned. "You know Rick, I could easily bust Ugarte anytime I want, but there is something about that sniveling little weasel that.... well.... it is down right enduring."
