Chapter 9 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

What's next?

(Grill) Press Yara on her rivalry with Wanda

It might be hard to lean into Yara when her built bodyguard was hovering around her, which you guessed would be most of the time. With the fearsome blonde nowhere to protect her, now seemed like the time to go in swinging with some hard-hitting questions. Right now, the most suspicious part about Yara was how eagerly she was playing up her rivalry with the victim-- it was the exact opposite of what you'd expect from a guest under reasonable suspicion of being the culprit. Maybe she wanted to act unshakeable in the face of suspicion?

If that was the case, you'd just have to shake her.

You pulled out your pad and made a show of jotting notes, then told Yara that she'd just made suspect number one on your list. You two hadn't been talking for ten minutes yet and she'd already made her grudges against Wanda Croft the centerpiece of the conversation. Wanda's recent episode hadn't even gone cold yet and instead of sympathy for her peer in the industry, Yara was grinning from ear to ear, laughing like a hyena. What did she have to say for herself?

Her smile wavered for just a moment, turning small as the woman retreated a few steps, then returned to its usual size. "Oh ho! I think you're over-blowing it just a bit, my dear Malcolm! Just because I thought the woman was an upstart doesn't mean I wished her any harm! Come now, you don't suspect little old me, do you?"

You told her that you were going to do more than suspect her: you'd have her in cuffs before the night was over. Once she was confined, everyone else could continue their vacation in peace.

"C-Cuffs?! Don't threaten me with a good time, oh ho ho ho!" she laughed, but you noticed her head swiveling indiscreetly from left to right as she scanned the room for her bodyguard to come to he rescue. "A big, strong fellow like yourself must be gentle with a lady like me, yes?"

Making yourself even taller by standing at your full height, you told her to explain one good reason why you shouldn't cuff her right now.

Yara's lip trembled for a moment. Her characteristic smile left her face and her front teeth bit down onto her lower lip tightly. It was clear she really didn't want to be apprehended by the law... you wondered if that was just nerves on her part or because she had some kind of history or bad blood with law enforcement. "B-Because I was... exaggerating! For the sake of an entertaining story, for your benefit, if anything! Wanda Croft and I aren't rivals at all. It's true that I'm a collector of some renown, but Wanda and I don't have any history. I had no reason to think she'd bear any feelings whatsoever towards me-- I was as surprised as anyone when I got an invitation! If anything, I admire her somewhat."

It'd be pretty impressive if she was managing to keep up a lie while so overtly intimidated, so you marked that down as a truth you could count on for now. As you were writing, however, she spilled some more interesting info, unbidden.

"Actually, it's that other detective you ought to suspect, if you're looking for someone with a grudge! Have you heard anything about Dee Langley yet?"

Your interest was piqued. You shook your head, then encouraged Yara to tell you everything she knew.

"Dee is here on the island too and those two go way, way back! They're true rivals. Dee has always suspected the Croft family of some foul play and I think Wanda Croft taunted her into coming here. It isn't so hard to imagine Dee came armed with some artifact or spell or something to turn the tables on Wanda, is it? Ho ho ho, perhaps she got her vengeance by turning Wanda into the sex **** of you, a perfect stranger?" Yara giggled, seeming back in her element now that she was out of the crosshairs and someone else had taken her place. "Yes, if you want someone with a real axe to grind, it's not me, it's the other detective Dee Langley! You really ought to go interrogate her, darling."

Her name kept coming up... it seemed like a lot of people had suspicions about her. You thanked Yara for the tip.

"Happy to help!" the woman cooed, sounding self-satisfied, although you mentally noted that she'd been misleading rather than cooperative until you pressed her.
