Chapter 8

What are your thoughts?
'Well, shit.'
Looking at the modestly-sized suburban home you stand to inherit, you can't help but frown. This guy had millions, and decided he was going to live here? In utter suburban mundanity? Ugh. He could have chosen to live anywhere! A penthouse in New York! An estate in the Rockies! Shit, even just downtown here seems more attractive than... this.
The attorney sitting in the driver's seat notices your scowl and sighs. "My apologies if our earlier discussion regarding Universal Robodynamics negatively-impacted your view of the estate on offer. That was not my intention. I simply needed to give you context for the contents of the property, as they are... unique." Again with the strange verbal emphasis! You look at him curiously, and he simply looks back at you with a shrug. "Regardless, you surely must admit that it's an improvement from your... present circumstances."

That's thousands of times better than the shithole apartment you rent now. Even if you just sell the house and use the proceeds to move somewhere you actually want to live, this stranger's estate has at the very least dramatically improved your life over where it stood this morning. And here you are mentally shit-talking him because he could have given you more instead of spending it on himself.
After a moment, Mr. Baxter interrupts your self-reflection by opening the car door. "If you would, please follow me - I need to review the whole of the estate with you before you can assume possession."
You follow him up to the front entrance, lost in your own thoughts. Should you just turn around and sell? It's not like you'll be able to get a place this big in one of the bigger cities. But this really isn't your style...
You snap out of it when the attorney steps up to the door and knocks three times lightly against the glass. "...Are we meeting someone here?" you ask in confusion.
Mr. Baxter, for once, seems to not know what to say... at least for a brief moment. Finally he responds - "Not exactly, no."
You open your mouth to seek clarification, but before you can say a word the door is opened from within.
You stand face-to-face with...
