Chapter 12

What is your answer to his query?

'No, you're right.'

You sigh, puffing out a deep breath. "No, you're right." You state, resignedly. "The kids are the weakest link here and if they haven't given up the game to Mrs. McMillan already we need to do everything we can to keep them from doing so with others in the future. I suppose I will grow accustomed to the feminine pronouns in time, but just understand that I will probably remain uncomfortable with them for quite a while." You state with resignation, trying to gird yourself to not being able to be your birth gender, even at home. "By the way, why did the government chose female pronouns for me?" You query, hoping they have an answer to a question that's been bugging you.

"They didn't, the U.F.P. did." Chef Joseph states swiftly.

"Oh?" You probe.

"They didn't brief you on that part?" He asks skeptically.

"They gave me a tablet with a complete dossier that I am supposed to memorize, but I haven't had time to read it, what with training and the kids." You state.

"Well for one thing then, you are not going to get any sleep tonight. You and I will be working on memorizing that dossier!" Chef Joseph states seriously. "I can cook just fine on no sleep at all, and will call into the strategic command and tell them to have the base take it easy on you tomorrow, but you absolutely MUST memorize the information they gave you, your children's lives may depend on it." He elaborates.

"What did they tell YOU?" You ask, hoping to get a leg up on tonight.

"That is relevant to this conversation?" He queries rhetorically before forging ahead. "That your species is an almost extinct race due to an ancient yet ongoing feud with one of the U.F.P.'s rivals. As a result of this members with high feminine fertility are highly valued, and because of that, like with English and the gradual replacement of 'Thou' with the plural 'You' because it was an honorific, your species, in cases where a language does not have gender neutral pronouns for things such as parenthood, gender identity, and child status, they use the feminine or egg laying / pregnancy bearing gender, as it implies higher status in their own culture." He explains.

"Whoa, hold up a second, while I can understand how in that case I would call myself and have other's call me 'Her' and 'Mam' and so on, why would I not use the 'gender correct' terminology for my parental status? 'Tab A goes into Slot B' is apparently still relevant here..." You probe, looking for more info, but are disappointed...

"I don't know, that was not explained to me, though it probably is in the dossier, which is why you need to read that tonight. For now you must just have faith that there probably is a reason, either cultural or physiological." Chef Joseph declares.

"Ok then: getting back to the previous topic." You declare, switching back to Mrs. Williams third point after the lengthy digression. "With regard to establishing a curriculum, this is partially accomplished already, but you are correct that it needs to be done more thoroughly now that they are no longer in regular school. I have Sundays and Mondays off from the base, shall we schedule that for Monday?" You ask Mrs. Kelly.

"That will be quite acceptable." Kelly responds in her strange accent that you can't quite place, sounds kind of like Boston but not quite.

"Alright, does anyone else have points they wish to raise?" You ask.

Who speaks next?
