Chapter 14

How do you react?
"Ugh. REALLY?!"
You stare into the darkness, a scowl deepening on your face with every moment. Finally you slam the door shut, turning around to look at the lawyer standing reservedly beside you.
"Tell me," you snap angrily, "does this man's will and testament directly call us all fools? Or does it just treat us like it?" Mr. Baxter's eyes widen, and he seems to struggle to find an appropriate response. Fortunately for him, you meant it as a rhetorical question - and you're not bothering to wait for an answer. "He's playing with us. A fucking dead man is playing with us like we're just another set of toys for his amusement."
"...I beg your pardon?" the attorney responds, bewildered by your outburst. All you can do is sigh.
"It's a showpiece," you growl at last. "This isn't some oversight of his last wishes. It's intentional. A way to make it known what he's been up to - in his view, what he's 'accomplished' - now that he's not around to suffer the consequences. And if it traumatizes someone who's dragged into seeing it in hopes of getting this inheritance? So much the better for him. Well I'm no fool. And I will NOT be treated as one."
Mr. Baxter frowns deeply, taking a step back from the storage room and heading for the door of the lab. "I see. Well, given such - I understand your frustration. Believe me, I would have cleared that space out weeks ago if I had the freedom."
"I'm glad you didn't," you say with a shake of your head - and the attorney's mouth drops open. "That's all anyone has left of Harold's work," you clarify with a nod towards the closed-off room. "If I'm to know anything about these creations, including how to reproduce or repair them, I'll have to learn it in there - and likely use some of those parts."
At this, the lawyer's look of surprise turns thoughtful. "I understand," he says at last. "So you plan on repairing Eve?"
"I plan to have the option to, at least," you reply with a snort of derision. "I don't like the idea of having this dead bastard dictate to me what I can and can't do with his estate." After a moment, you sigh. "But legally, before I can do anything at all - I need to see the rest. So lead on."
