Chapter 31 by Zingiber Zingiber

What does Veevee say?

"Sabrina." (END)

"Sabrina," the voice called. "Ms. Menard?"

"Oh right!" Sabrina said. The leggy, freckled nineteen-year-old blonde stepped up.

"We have your results," the white-coated counselor said.

Sabrina sat across from the genetic counselor. The counselor's medical ID, clipped to her white coat, had a slightly younger, happier picture of the woman who wore it, with tight-curled black hair over a smiling brown face with hazel eyes. Today, "MAVIS LIGHTHOUSE, M.A., M.S., CGC." was calm and businesslike.

"Now, I'll review the results with you," Ms. Lighthouse said. "Your genetic variants with regard to health and to response to medicines will go into your medical record. I'd say we know now why you were having that reaction last year."

Sabrina nodded along as Ms. Lighthouse went through the routine medical meaning of her genetic make-up.

"That's all the medically relevant information," Ms. Lighthouse said. "Now, as an adult, there are some additional results that you may wish to review related to genetic markers of descent. In some cases this may be disturbing information. Although you've signed the consent item, I will ask you if these are items you want to cover."

Sabrina raised her eyebrows. "Yes, certainly," she said.

Ms. Lighthouse said, "We have your father and mother's profiles on file, Henry and Virginia Menard. One clear finding from a comparison of genetic markers is that Virginia Menard is your genetic mother. However, Henry Menard is not your genetic father."

"What?" Sabrina said. "Oohhhh." Surprise baby, they called her. Miracle baby, sometimes. Well, Mom and Dad are swingers, Sabrina knew. So who was it?

"Your genetic father does share a number of markers with your father," Ms. Lighthouse said. "So it would have to be a fairly close relative." She handed Sabrina a sheet of possible matches.

"Oh," Sabrina said. Her face flushed pink. "OH."

"You'll see that I've added contact information if you want to discuss these results with one of our other counselors specializing in these issues," Ms. Lighthouse said.

"No, that's all right," Sabrina said. "Thank you so much. Thank you."

Suddenly so many things made sense.

Sabrina smiled at Ms. Lighthouse. "You've just helped me sort out a lot I didn't understand. Sorry, got to go. I have to make a call."

Sabrina paced up and down in the courtyard of the medical center. The call connected.

"Hey Sabrina, what's up, little sis?" Gary said.

"Gary," Sabrina said. "Gary, hey..."

"What's so exciting?" Gary said.

"I just, I mean, I just found out...you're my real dad."

"Um," Gary said. "Yes." He cleared his throat.

"Does, I mean, who knows?" Sabrina said.

"Mom. Dad. Lil. Peter and Sandy Walker," Gary said. "And my wife."

"I want to know all about it," Sabrina said.

"Um," Gary said. "Guess you deserve it. I'll tell Mom and we'll...we'll talk."

"I'm sure it will be quite the story," Sabrina said.

"Yeah," Gary said. "It's the kind of movie you'll want tissues AND popcorn for."

Sabrina laughed. "I can't wait. DAD."

"SIS," Gary teased back.

(END).
