Chapter 10

How do you respond?
"It's a pleasure to meet you too!"
"Hi there, Lily!" you say with a smile to match that of the young maid girl. "It's a pleasure to meet you too! I didn't think there was going to still be staff at work here. How long were you employed by Mr. Rossum?"
The response you get from your friendly greeting is not what you would have expected. A look of shock flashes across her face for a moment, before vanishing in a slight nod and a return of her wide grin. "I served our late Master as a loyal plaything for twenty years - and I'm overjoyed to have the opportunity to serve you as well! Anything that comes to mind, simply let me know. I'll be happy to fulfill your every desire!"
Looking at the small, curvy girl, you can't help but think of several desires she could fulfill. You can absolutely see why the former owner of the home hired her as a "plaything," and if you had the money you'd readily contemplate doing the same. Yet, at the same time, something seems wrong. She said she'd served Harold for twenty years. That's just impossible - the girl barely looks eighteen! You can't help but ask the obvious question. "Excuse me if this is a bit rude, but you just look so young that I don't quite understand - how old are you?"
The girl giggles in answer, setting her body aquiver. "It's quite alright, new Master! I was born by the late Master's hands twenty years ago, and served him faithfully ever since. I hope to do the same for you!"
...Uh. What? You open your mouth to unleash a torrent of additional questions, only to be interrupted by Mr. Baxter's voice beside you. "Perhaps I should explain."
You shoot him a look. "Perhaps?"
The attorney sighs as he waves a hand in Lily's direction. "A meaningful portion of the estate left to my firm's care consists of these two. Lily and her... 'sister'... Eve were created by Mr. Harold Rossum, possibly even on the property. They are robots, Noah. Androids."
That answer only gave you further questions - ones such as 'how the hell didn't you notice this man was absolutely insane before you got in a car with him?' "Are you seriously telling me that-" you start, angrily, only for him to stop you with short directions:
"Look at her ears, look at her eyes. You tell me."
...
...Well shit. Humans sure as fuck don't have hearts for pupils, and the metallic ball-shaped devices you'd previously written off as some sort of new tech gadget you now note as directly merging into the girl's skin. Or whatever passes for skin on her, at least. Mr. Baxter was telling the truth - Lily is an android!
Your mouth drops open. "How?" is the only word you can come up with, and the only response you get is a shrug.
"We have no idea," he sighs. "All we have is the testimony of these girls that Harold built them as his 'playthings' and clear evidence that they are certainly not human. The rest of the estate demonstrates that clearly enough. My personal guess is that he poured his wealth into making them, though the methods used are obviously beyond any understanding I could hope to grasp. Whatever secrets to their construction exist, they presumably died with him."
You look back at Lily once more, catching her in the act of observing you with a curious look - but the moment your eyes swing back in her direction she breaks out into her wide smile yet again. You can't help but feel embarrassed, knowing that you've been discussing her very being right in front of her.
Right as you're about to apologize, however, Mr. Baxter steps further into the entryway with a wave of his hand. "Come. You need to see the remainder of the property. Perhaps it will make things clearer for you."
You follow the attorney out of the entryway and into the main part of the home, followed closely behind by Lily. As you enter, you nearly run headlong into who you can only assume is 'Eve.' She has similar ears to her sister, and is covered in enough bandages that a living person would have trouble standing from the apparent extent of her injuries. You can't help but frown, and in response she looks almost panicked.
"Sincere apologies," she says in a soft voice - full of concern. "Lunch is being prepared, and final touches were required before it could be left to cook. Lily's call was heard quite clearly, and this one was heading for the entryway for proper greetings and introductions when you appeared. Please show lenience for this most terrible breach of etiquette."
How do you react?
