Chapter 21 by amalgam amalgam

What do you say?

"I'll think about it."

Looks like Pestova has you spooked enough that you won't even go back when a cute girl is asking you to. You can always hang out with her outside of class, anyway.

Another day goes by without you in class. The animosity on your floor has subsided a bit, but you still can't talk to your friends like you used to. No, you're basically still an outcast to everyone but Viv, who comes to talk to you when her day is up.

"Hey, I'm back," she says, just entering the first floor MacLaren lobby. You're fidgeting with the lock on your mailbox.
"Hi, Viv, how was it today?" Her real name is Bibiana, but most everyone calls her Viv.
"Okay. The professor's starting to get pretty militant. Honestly, I think she's a little crazy." Viv puts her bookbag down and accesses her own mailbox.

That Dr Pestova's getting more **** isn't any surprise. It was obvious ten days ago that she was a radical feminist.

"How's that one other guy in the class doing?" you ask curiously.
Viv rifles through her letters. "I don't really talk to him, but from what I overhear, he doesn't have any problem."
"Pestova doesn't even give him a hard time?"
"Like, she does, sort of, but he doesn't really care. I guess he doesn't mind." Funny.

Your key emits a loud crunch as it finally twists within the old lock. You'll probably want to ask the front desk to fix this for you.

"Anything good?" Viv asks of your mail.
"I don't know, let's see... Uday, Uday, bill, Uday..." you shuffle through the contents of the mailbox, which is actually assigned to both you and Uday. "...bill, Uday," ah, here's one for you, and it's not a bill.
"Ooh, what is it?"

It's a small envelope-- the kind you use for post cards-- the flap sealed shut with a small sticker of an anthopomorphized heart beaming its chops. You open the mail and extract the singly-folded slip inside. It reads:

"I hope that you will forgive my appalling behavior a week and a half ago. Please come see me in my office: Taraval 380C.

Sincerely,
Tereza Pestova, PhD
Department of Women's Studies

What should you make of this? You hand the terse message over to your friend, who smiles for you.

"Oh, this is great! You can come back to class! Everything will be okay again!"
"Um, I don't know..."

"What? Why not?"
