I came to a roll, and caught a scent behind me; a chance come from the gawking bystanders who'd come to watch the demon-killing. I screamed, feeling power flow out in a wave of hunger, and sent several nearby bystanders tumbling into the dirt. I pivoted, and put my hostage between me and the warmaiden. My hostage screamed, shrill, and sent a basket of herbs scattering across the ground.

"Coward." She hissed, standing next to Kali's body. She had her hand on the hilt of the sword.

I looked at the crowd around me; at a large militia-man with a despairing face, at the Elderman, a young man with tears in his eyes, at a dozen villagers who were too frightened to move. "Fair enough; you've already killed the only one here with an ounce of courage. So, fuck it, I figure."

"One last chance." Her fingers tightened around the hilt. "Surrender to your ****. The church dictates that your **** is more important than a handful of lives. You've already destroyed so much; May and her family demand justice."

Something pierced my side instead, and I fell in surprise. A white hot pain rain through my spine as I hit the ground, and I looked up to find 'Ma'; the farmer's wife who'd been left broken in the ruins of her home, with a kitchen knife in hand. She fell on me and drove the knife into my chest.

She screamed, and did it again and again and again.

I gurgled out a laugh, irony hitting me like the knife, and died.
