"Can't pass this up!"

You consider yourself spontaneous, but you?d never imagine just taking off on a plane at a moment?s notice. But perhaps this is just the thing you need to invigorate you. And besides, it?s only a four day trip, so you?ll still have a couple days to clean up any loose ends before your new job starts. Your Mom somehow is able to admonish and encourage your decision all in the same conversation, while also cajoling you into a couple of chores, which you easily fit in before driving to the airport.

Your dear boyfriend is understanding as well, though you could catch a hint of disappointment in his voice. Heck, you were looking forward to a couple of nights with him, too, but you both know this is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Maddie picks you up and you make it to your flight in plenty of time.

It?s dark when you reach Vegas, but it?s still early evening. With the brief nap you got on the plane, you?re ready to hit the strip that night. Maddie feels likewise, so after checking into your hotel, you head down Las Vegas Boulevard.

?We have to see some shows while we?re here,? Maddie says.

?Of course!? you reply.

You discuss Cirque de Soleil, Blue Man Group, and a few others, and decide to wait until morning to get tickets. Tonight will be your one night of gambling! The Mirage is where you end up, and you find the nearest ATM.

?How much you going to spend?? you ask your confidant.

?Oh, I don?t know,? Maddie says. ?I think forty will be good. I?m sure I?ll lose it right away, and I want to save some money for the rest of the week. You??

?I feel lucky,? you say, as you withdraw eighty dollars from your account.

?I?d say. Hey, there?s the nickel slots over there. Join me??

Maddie was right. Her luck is terrible. It doesn?t take but twenty-five minutes and all her money is gone. Deciding not to tempt fate (and pre-programmed machines), you shy away from using the machine next to her.

?Guess I?ll watch you try your luck,? Maddie remarks. ?Whatcha gonna play??
