Essence of Atlantis

There are eight crystals in the world, each connected to one of the primal essences of the ocean: (Starting from the top clockwise) Life, Power, Magic, Logic, ****, Mind, Science, and Imagination.

Long ago, a simple fisherman found the Crystal of Logic and was infused with a deep understanding of how the world worked. He used that knowledge to start development on what would eventually become the Kingdom of Atlantis, its size and strength increasing with each of the other crystals collected until it became the empire of legend.

One day, the then-current ruler tried to wield all eight crystals simultaneous, but the combined power was too much for him/her (history is unclear) to control.

...the rest is history; Atlantis fell to the sea.

However, the crystals absorbed the consciences of every mind in Atlantis. As they were swept away by the resulting tides, they all agreed on a new strategy to choose individuals worthy of wielding them.

Eons passed, and none of the few who found the crystals made it past the first trial.

Finally, in the present day, all eight sent out a telepathic signal at the same time:
