A Parting GIft

Chapter 1 by MonoCurious MonoCurious

The Fender acoustic was the only thing your old guitar teacher of six years left before he left town on a stolen motorcycle, so needless to say you were pretty pissed when Spike smashed it on your chest in the Kmart parking lot while his girlfriend Liz cheered him on. Why, exactly? Some kids said he had an agressive disorder from when he got shot in the head with a nailgun when he was seven, causing a chemical imbalance in his brain, but you think it's more likely his dad got a little handsy with him when he was a kid. Spike throws a lit cigarette butt which barely misses your head before walking away with Liz. Pissed off but worried to get up and realize your ribs are broken. When you do eventually stand up you find out the injuries aren't really that bad but your guitar isn't going to make it. The biggest remaining piece is the fretboard, but the body is completely destroyed. Then you notice something that must have been hidden inside the guitar, a small scroll tied with a rubber band. You decide to unwrap it, hoping to find a note from your former mentor, but instead find a sort of poem, a spell, you suppose. Discrediting it, but sticking it in your pocket anyway, you get up and try to leave the parking lot with as much dignity as possible. It was late anyway and you have school tomorrow.

The next day you take the bus in and head to first period Literature. Taking your seat in the back you put your head down and avoid Liz, Spike's girlfriend, who's less violent but still kind of a bitch to you.
"Excuse me, do you have your poem?"
Mrs. Hudak, your English teacher, wants you to read your poem.
"Oh shit." You think to yourself. "I completely forgot about that." Thinking fast, you pull the scroll you got from the guitar out of your pocket and go to the front of the room to read it. It's not long, and it barely rhymes but it's better than anything you've ever written. Afterwards you look up at the class and say "Hey, how about a standing ovation?" And suddenly the whole class jolts out of their seat and starts clapping and cheering. Stunned, you sit back down next to Liz who's still clapping.
"Well, if you liked it that much how about a kiss?" You say jokingly, and to your surprise she plants one right on your lips! Suddenly you realize it was the poem! The scroll you found in the guitar was an actual spell!

But what to do now?
