Chapter 9 by Omni-kid Omni-kid

How will you fare in your second match?

know your enemy and know yourself

So, you were up against Zane Boolie. Well, his student records indicated little merit outside of overwhelming ****, more than his fit but still relatively normal frame should allow. Aura boosted your physical abilities, sure, but not to that extent. You assumed it had to be connected to his semblance somehow. That means outside of dodging the violent attacks of his mace you shouldn't really encounter any curveballs. He did also use a round shield, meaning both of you had somewhat balanced fighting styles. That struck you as weird. His abrasive personality and rash behaviour didn't make him seem like the defensive type. While his negative comment about your dodging seemed inconsequential at the time, combined with what you now knew about his abilities it led you to believe there was more to it. He has **** strength, but still chooses an unnecessarily heavy weapon as well as a shield instead of simply relying on his aura for defense. He must be aiming to maximise the impact of every hit while preventing the opponent from lowering his aura as much as possible. The reason could be anything from a sign of otherwise undetectable intelligence to simple cowardice, but to you it screamed that his semblance had a downside of some sort.
Before you could even finish that thought the bell rang, signalling you to enter the gym for your second battle of the tournament.

Zane entered the arena in a cocky stride, rallying the audience behind him. While he was a fan favourite thanks to his confident attitude and violent fighting style, much akin to an ancient gladiator. You also received a fair few cheers and encouraging shouts as well, most definitely due to your victory against Jean in the first round. Zane didn't seem to notice or care much about it instead looking towards you and mouthing what you assumed to be some sort of insult or mockery. You were still hung up on your earlier thoughts, which he seemed to take as a sign of insecurity, further blowing up his already straining ego. No, you were anything but insecure. In fact, you had a plan, one that could potentially end this fight without you taking a single hit.

As soon as the bell rang you ran ahead, taking the initiative, much to Zane's surprise. He followed suit and seconds later you were about to collide, him charging with his mace held overhead and you with the point of your sword aimed directly toward him. He must have bought your bluff because his shield was still in front of his torso, anticipating a stab from your blade. You had other plans, instead taking your momentum into a slide and slashing at his shins while his mace came crashing down behind you. While didn't exactly have the time to look closely you could have sworn you saw cracks in the wooden floor of the gym. The slash seemed to have done it's job as Zane looked incredibly pissed. You would have liked to say that was the hard part, but this battle was just about to start.

You needed to get in a lot more hits than this you thought to yourself, sweating and panting from exhaustion. Dodging his swings was easy, sure, but the constant running, rolling and dodging was draining. For Zane it seemed the attacks were similarly exhausting, but not just physically. A quick look at Infotracker earlier confirmed as much. Every single attack, as devastating as they were, was also infused with a bit of his aura. This was the reason for his choice of equipment and aggressive attitude, he quite literally couldn't afford to fight a war of attrition. By this point his Aura had just hit the halfway point, partly due to your infrequent but still decently effective attacks. You had initially hoped his attacks would reduce in strength according to his aura level but either his semblance didn't work like that or he lacked the control to adjust the amount of aura he uses. Either way his attacks were as brutal as ever so to survive this in one piece both of you needed this to go faster and that's something neither of you liked to admit. Still, not even a second later both of you rushed forward once again.

His Mace seemed to come out of nowhere, likely because you had a bad habit of checking Infotracker at the worst possible moments. It was too late to dodge all you could do was try to block and pray that you, and hopefully infotracker, survive this. You were about to close your eyes as you saw Zane change his angle, massively so. Instead of the overhead swing he was initially going for his mace now flew toward you from the front. With no idea why, but also without time to care you ducked under the attack and forcefully slashed across Zane's back in response. A few more moments of dodging passed and once again his angle changed, as if repelled by Infotracker. Wait, what? Didn't Jean do something similar? She also denied your joking offer to trade equipment with unusual confusion.
Was... there something about Infotracker people didn't like? No that didn't seem right.
Were they cautious because of it's electronic parts? Zane didn't seem like the type to care. Actually didn't he grab and throw it on the ground just earlier? What changed between then and now?
Was it the signature? It seemed extremely stupid, like fanfiction level stupid, but that was your only guess.
Snapping back to the fight you realized you were on your back foot. If you were right about this it could win you the battle, if not you could say goodbye to Infotracker and any chance you might have had at Beacon with it... but you had to risk it.
Anticipating this to be the end of the fight Zane turned his upper body at the hip, likely preparing for a devastating strike toward your stomach. You didn't dodge, or even try to. Once his Mace was only inches away from your body you raised your forearm, and Infotracker with it. You almost pushed it into the attack, bracing for impact.
But there wasn't much of an impact. As soon as his weapon made contact with the screen of Infotracker Zane visibly repulsed and a look of shock spread on his face. The audience looked confused, though some people in the front row shared his attitude.
"Fuck! Dude I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hit your stuff! Is it broken?" he leaned toward it, inspecting it for cracks. You were completely dumbfounded. This absolute Idiot is currently looking if he accidentally broke Infotracker in the middle of a battle. You were right. YOU WERE RIGHT! But you were also incredibly confused.
You should save that for later though, because you still had a fight to win. Tightening your grip on the hilt of your sword you raised your arm and then moved it downward in a swift motion. As the pommel of you sword hit the back of Zane's head his aura fizzled red and he came crashing down. He was ****.
The referee called the match in your favour and despite the confusion the audience still cheered for you, entertained by the chaos of what had just transpired.

So, about your semblance...
