"You know," Crystal says, "back at MicroStuff, I sort of liked you."

"Really?" You were clueless. Not that you would have done anything about it given you were married to Amber."

"Yep. But then I noticed you always treated me like I was some sort of mentally handicapped person."

"Uh, I didn't mean to."

"Well, you did. When you explained things to one of the guys, you just explained it. But when you talked to me, it was always, 'am I going too fast.'"

"Sorry. I... I'm not good dealing with women."

"Yeah, okay. Well, anyway, I know I sometimes struggled with real-time systems but I'm a good programmer. If we're going to work on this project together, we need to have some respect for each other."

"Got it. I can do that."

"Okay." She nods in a agreement with herself. "So, the way I see it, we've got three things to deal with. First, we've got to stay alive... meaning both earning some money and not getting murdered by MicroStuff or whomever is behind the coverup. Second, we've got to figure out the basis for the language. And third, we need to investigate what, exactly, notifies the machine that we're going into machine mode rather than just having a normal conversation."

You nod. "Sounds about right."

"So, tell me what you've got so I can figure how I can help you most."

You take things in order, telling her about your having Elizabeth in the library research MicroStuff, Amber's church, and whatever else she can find on the plot. Second, you explain the work you're doing with Anna and Mara to develop a math-based language to control the sim.

She interrupts to ask about Enochian and the theory that Hebrew is actually the language of God.

You've read about Hebrew being the language of God also, but the logic seems to be based on the Hebrew Bible (because the Hebrew Bible was written in Hebrew, therefore God must have spoken Hebrew). Other religions could make similar claims for their native languages and the historical evidence for Hebrew being anything other than just one more Canaanite language. As for Enochian, you're convinced by the arguments that it is too English to be a mystical language of the angels. "It's got to come back to math," you conclude.

"Fine," she says. "But lots of people do math all the time. In a sense, that's what we programmers do all day. And, hate to tell you but we're not wizards."

Crystal looks at you funny. "So, you're saying that if we do math while we have sex, we can do magic?"
