Chapter 5 by Hollin Hollin

Do you investigate?

You can't resist

Your better judgement says this is a bad idea, but your insatiable curiosity wins out and you return to your feet to seek the source of the humming. Moving slowly in the darkness, the scanner held out in front you, you wend your way between trees. The sound gradually grows louder as you move...it certainly does not sound natural to your ears. Eventually, even more surprisingly, you see a source of light in the distance! Mindful of the fact that could be hostile aliens in the vicinity, you take out your laser and approach the light very cautiously.

Being sure to keep hidden behind the trunks of larger trees, you eventually reach a large clearing in the forest. Much to your surprise and delight, there appears to be a small village of sorts with a large, roaring fire in the center. You are quickly able to rule out this being the aliens from the mysterious ship you encountered in space, as there appears to be no technology whatsoever. The huts of the village are very rudimentary...made of mud and sticks. Your scanner confirms your visual appraisal, and detects no sources of energy outside of the blazing fire. As you watch, you are eventually able to spy the denizens of the settlement moving around the fire. They appear to be small, humanoid figures...no hair that you can see, with skin a bright reddish shade of color. They appear to be gathering for a meal, placing trays of fruits and vegetables on low lying tables around the fire. A fact that causes your stomach to rumble needily...

So absorbed in your observations, that the first notice you have that you aren't alone is a sharp jab in your back. You turn quickly to find three of the little aliens standing before you...spears leveled ominously at your midsection. They may be primitive, but they certainly would be able to do you damage before you could even aim your laser at them. One of them nods in the direction of the village, his intentions obvious. Seeing no other option, you turn and march into the village...a prod in your back ever so often to remind you of their presence.
