Chapter 13

How will you respond to the idea of breaking up the Goodbye Girls?
You agree, but with one condition
You had to admit, the committee's plan had sound logic behind it. The Goodbye Girls were, frankly, too much for one handler to control. You'd seen plenty of benefits from having them on a single mission together, but Madison had a point: how much more could they have accomplished working globally, responding not just to a mission at a time, but instead, to the needs of an international base as they occurred? Handlers may have an easier time doing the work with a single target at a time, too. How you'd managed to juggle all four of them this whole time was a mystery in and of itself; you certainly could have maintained a closer focus if you'd only had one agent to keep surveillance over.
The committee waited patiently for you to simply nod your head in agreement, but you weren't that stupid. You knew that Milaslava was probably the one who'd come up with this plan-- further evidenced by Madison naming CEDIT Russia as one of the new bases for the Goodbye Girls-- and you knew what she hoped to get out of it. Namely, this was another ploy by the Russian CEDIT head to reclaim her favorite pet project, Tschau. As such, you threw out your first condition: Tschau was not to be put back on assignment with CEDIT Russia. Your words didn't just make clear your intention to keep the cybernetically enhanced agent out of their hands; they also issued a warning that you intended to have Russia's operations investigated and the remaining ties to the rogue scientist cells brought into a spotlight.
Bortnik frowned broadly in response, tapping out her cigar on an ash-tray before bringing the mic closer to herself and speaking closely into it. "You dare levy accusations like that against my division in front of the international committee? You must recognize this is not the time, nor the place."
"On the contrary," Madison countered, half-lowering her eyelids as she sat with her hands crossed upon her podium, "this is the time for hammering out an action plan. If there are valid concerns related to which of the Girls goes where, now is the time to address them. I think we can all agree it is best that none of the agents be assigned to divisions with which they are unlikely to perform without distractions. Perhaps Despedida would be a better fit? It seems that she's more than capable of filling in for your late brother."
"My brother has nothing to do with my operations," Milaslava spat in response.
"... We will be looking into your recent advancements in robotics technology, Ms. Bortnik. In a separate hearing, of course," the London leader responded, frowning impatiently. "As for the reassignment of the Goodbye Girls, you can rest assured, Ciao: we plan to use your advisement and Goodbye's as the final decision on the matter, should you have any input to offer. I'm not certain I personally trust the girls to assume their own assignments... but this is another situation where your expertise will be invaluable. You'll certainly have your pick, as to who you'd like to stay in Washington."
On one hand, you could breathe a sigh of relief; it sounded as though your future assignment would be much more manageable. On the other hand... You felt a sense of anxiety at the idea that some timetable would be established, after which, you would lose your regular contact with the Girls. Was that your sense of sentimentality? Or could it be that you felt anxious about what would happen, without your watchful eyes upon them? Whatever the case, you were happy to hear that at least you'd be allowed to make the judgment call when the time came. That meant there was no chance of Milaslava getting her way. You saw the woman gritting her teeth and clutching her metal hand to the table... She probably wished she'd realized the tide was so heavily against her before she'd allowed the meeting to go forward.
"With that business out of the way, I'd say the meeting is adjourned. Further details can be handled remotely in the future. Thank you for your understanding, Ciao; this is, indeed, perhaps the greatest matter of world security still outstanding for our divisions to wrestle with." Madison finished the hearing, then slid her microphone back into position across her desk.
You thought you saw Goodbye dabbing at her forehead with a handkerchief. She'd probably been pretty worried that the pressure was going to get thrown over to her at some point to make her own judgment call and appreciated you taking the lead in her place.
