Chapter 52

Here goes.....
You've got to jump!
AHH! You're pretty sure that running down the bridge would only have the monster follow you, and you don't fully trust Delilah to not blow you up with the monster if the alternative is not blowing up the monster at all, so you quickly get a foothold onto the bridge's bannister and scramble to climb up and over it. The bridge isn't too high above the stream, so hopefully the drop will be okay.... but this bannister is too tall to make things easy!
The monster realises that the action's back on once you've got one leg hooked over, straddling the bannister. With a roaring screech of recommenced combat, it runs towards you with its scythe-arms pulled back. Eep!
The monster's scythe collides with you at speed, and with enough **** to send you toppling over the edge of the bridge to land on your back in the icy-cold flowing stream just a small distance below. You sit up, mostly unharmed, in time to see the monster turning its attention away from where you sit in the water towards Delilah on the other land mass. It screeches again, running towards her.
Delilah's eyes dart back and forth between you and the monster, a look of hesitation on her face as she holds what is probably a detonator in her hand. She scrunches up her face, muttering quiet calculations to herself as you start to try get up to your feet. But, before you're able to....
KKRA-CKOOOM!
A deafeningly loud explosion sounds from atop the bridge, and your top half is flooded by hot air as the bridge erupts into a fiery orange ball of light and the ground beneath you shakes. You bring up your arms to block your face and curl up, hearing splashes all around you as small chunks of the charred bridge land in the stream all around you.
With one final big delayed crash, what remains of the bridge collapses into the stream and forms a makeshift dam, stopping the flow of water and eventually draining the downstream part you're sitting in. You slowly remove your arms from in front of your eyes, cautiously peeking at the area all around you. The monster is nowhere in sight, and the water around you has been reduced to faint trickles through the stone burrow around you. That was action-packed, just now.
"Did you get it?" You ask Delilah. She nods silently, staring at where you sit haphazardly and mussed with (to you) a surprising amount of concern in her face.
Before you can get up and dust yourself off, the water on the other side of the bridge's wreckage builds up enough to start to flow over the top of it again, before sending the top parts crashing down and breaking the whole thing apart into floaty bits that rush with the built up pressure towards you. AHH! You thought the action was over!
A large piece of charred bannister topples on top of you, not hurting but still effectively pinning your leg in place under the water as more pieces of bridge flow past you.
"Debbie!" Delilah shouts, running towards you and immediately working to dig you out of the rubble. The wood is much lighter than either of you expected it to be, fortunately, so she's able to get you unstuck and pull you up to your feet quickly.
She's panting heavily despite her minimal exertions, standing just in front of you in the stream water. She looks you up and down to check for damages. Her hands are still on your shoulders after pulling you up. Your hair and your clothes are completely soaked, and now she's done the same to herself, but luckily there's been no physical harm done. You give her a bright smile to confirm that there's no emotional harm either, even though that's only partially true, since cold water is running through your socks right now.
"Don't- you'd better not be such an idiot like that again." She says. You nod.
Delilah slowly looks to the hands she's placed on your shoulders and frowns, before pulling them back and looking at the palms like they've been tainted. Silently, she crouches down and lets the stream's cold water wash the Debbie off of her hands. You consider doing the same with your shoulders to get back at her, but that would probably be worse for you than for her.
"Alright, everybody, come in!" Professor Phoebe loudly calls out, hopping down from the hut's thatched roof on the other side of the battlefield. "It's evaluation time."
Without another word, the two of you slowly slosh your way out of the stream and head towards her. Cameron and Jace step out of the hut behind her together, both looking wholly unharmed. Oh, while you were over here Cameron must've finished up with his monster and gone over to help Jace. That means this simulated battle was an all-around victory for the entire class! That makes you feel really good.
It's pretty slow-going to walk the gravel path again, with how much water your hair and every piece of fabric on you is carrying, but you still manage to keep roughly in time with Delilah as she walks a few steps in front of you. Until she looks back, sees you, and breaks into a light jog towards the hut and you other classmates. Rats. Well, you'll get there eventually, anyway. You quicken your wet waddling pace.
You'd better not look silly right now. You hate when that happens.
