Chapter 24 by simmaster
Just how fucked are you?
You're not the one who's fucked.
You nervously move backwards, and then something yanks you off your feet. Right, you're still being pursued by your boss. And now he's got you.
He holds you by your hood, almost revealing your nondescript face as he stares you down where you sway back and forth in his grip. "Got you, you little creep... Now-"
Suddenly he too is yanked off his feet. The Keeper wraps him up in his stony arms and throws him over his shoulder. Considering the spiked shoulderguards, that has got to hurt. Fortunately for you, however, the sudden motion causes him to lose his grip on you, flinging you over The Keeper in a wide arc and you land face-first on the floor right in front of the door to your freedom.
"Hey!" he cries out, almost as surprised by this turn of events as you are. "I was gonna go back! He's the one trying to escape! Stupid fucking construct, do you hear what I'm saying?!"
The Keeper ignores him, carrying him nonchalantly through the hidden door, and it closes behind them while the necromancer continues his protests and slams his fists uselessly against his captor's stone back. "Him first! I'll go back on my own, just get him! You're wasting time!"
As the door slides shut, leaving no trace it was even there as it blends in with the wall, you take a moment to relax. Funny, apparently not even your boss is allowed to go outside his assigned area. Is The Keeper the true boss here? Or is he just enforcing a game rule that even bosses can't violate? You sure hope you won't have some stone-jerk telling you where you can and can't go even when you're a boss in your own right.
But first you need to get there. "There" currently meaning outside this dungeon. You quickly stumble to your feet and jump up and down, reaching for the doorknob. Again you struggle with actually grabbing a hold of it, so again you use your amulet. It's a little different from the lever since the doorknob is a metal ring, but you just swing the end with the jewel through the ring and grab a hold of both ends, pulling it open. You do really hope you'll eventually get a staff or something more optimal for reaching things with. Or better yet, gain some height.
Then, as the door finally swings open and you can see the bright light of freedom, you hear a sound behind you. Stones shifting.
Fuck. He's already back.
You don't even look. You hear him rise out of the floor behind you, you hear him raise his halberd, but you just sprint. It's right there! You're so close! You can't fail, not now!
...Then you trip. Your robe gets in your way just like it has many times and you step on it, flopping forward like an idiot.
You will not give up though. You can practically feel the incoming splitting of your feeble body, but your determination, or perhaps desperation, is unbreakable. You start crawling, knowing you have no time to stand up, and then... you hear it.
...You hear The Keeper lower his halberd again.
Wait, what? You make the potential mistake of turning your head back, and you see that you actually managed to trip right outside of the door. You were out of his reach all along. Apparently not even his weapon is allowed to leave the confines of the dungeon.
The towering stone construct simply turns, and walks right into a wall. Just like that, he's gone. You're not his problem anymore. And he's not your problem. You're free.
You break out into laughter. You did it. You're out of the dungeon at long, long last.
"Fuck you, bitch!" you yell after the departing Keeper. "You have no power here! I'm never gonna have to see your stupid face ever again! Hah! I'm freeee!"
You stand up and look around. It's so big. There are no walls, no ceiling, not even a floor. There's actual grass under your little feet. Green, soft, yet somewhat prickly grass. And you can see the sky, the sun, everything that seemed so distant and alien to you for so long. You take a deep breath, enjoying the smell of glorious freedom.
Where are you, anyway?

Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
