Chapter 11

Who do you think is the most suspicious?
You're most suspicious of Tschau
You took a deep breath, then answered conclusively: it had to be Tschau. Goodbye winced. "I thought you might say that... But let's go over your reasoning. I don't know everything about this meeting's purpose, but there's a chance it's going to come up. We need to make sure all of our notes are in order before we present that kind of information to top brass..."
Your encounter with Doctor Bortnik had done a lot to convince you that his favorite "daughter" was behind the previous attacks on CEDIT handlers. Bortnik's abilities in robotics were world class with the theme of cybernetic implants inside the brains of targets. It wasn't hard to think he or someone near him had manipulated Tschau's actions. {if Tschau's Hidden Past > 999}You'd never seen it happen on the job, of course, but if Tschau was a master of stealth, it could mean she was being controlled in stealth. It wasn't just her legs and fingers... Tschau's brain had been manipulated by CEDIT Russia as well. There were way too many ways that machinery could be controlled by outside forces, even if you couldn't find a reason for her to do the deed herself.
"You could have a point... If only she'd let the lab boys dive deep into those prosthetics. I don't trust Despedida to do it..." Goodbye trailed off, crossing her arms across her chest.{endif}{if Tschau Spared Bortnik = 1}
Only now had an even scarier point of evidence occurred to you: Tschau had spared Dr. Bortnik, right? That had been an extremely unlikely outcome that, at the time, you optimistically attributed to growth on the part of her character. In hindsight, though... what if Bortnik or Milaslava had pulled the strings, to ensure the doctor's survival? Could such a thing be possible?
"What a terrifying thought!" Goodbye agreed, shivering and clutching her arms.{endif}{if Tschau Affinity > 199}
Despite saying all of this, were you okay with turning your back on Tschau? If CEDIT decided she was the mole and if it was for the good of international security, they might take desperate measures, more rapid than simply restraining her and investigating those prosthetics. A more rapid means of ending her threat could be decided upon... You asked Goodbye that, in the end, you would be allowed to take care of the matter in your own way.
"I can't promise that, Ciao. You know better than anyone: this mission is of vital importance. It's bigger than you, me, or any of the Goodbye Girls. If worst comes to worst, CEDIT will do what has to be done," she promised with an unusually business-like manner. You sighed deeply in response.{endif}
The rest of the trip was spent busily continuing to discuss the matter. You'd managed to get your minds off of your suspicions earlier, when the plane ride had been pleasant and quiet, only to have that illusion ripped away and your mind returned to the mission.
