Chapter 11

Who do you think is the most suspicious?
You're most suspicious of Despedida
You took a deep breath, then answered conclusively: it had to be Despedida. Goodbye winced. "I thought you might say that... But let's go over your reasoning. I don't know everything about this meeting's purpose, but there's a chance it's going to come up. We need to make sure all of our notes are in order before we present that kind of information to top brass..."
You gave your answer easily enough: with Bortnik out of the picture, who else in the world had the kind of technical genius to manipulate CEDIT technology in the way she did, so as to allow this Namaste person access into the deepest reaches of CEDIT's security? Her history was also one big blank. {if Despedida's Hidden Past > 999}You'd had a chance to become familiar with her past as both a hacker and a CEDIT agent. Funny thing about that: neither one really exists. It would be bad enough if she'd simply materialized out of nowhere like Vaarvel, but her only credentials up to the point of become a Goodbye Girl were being a good enough hacker to be scouted for the position. It all smelt very strongly of her having some kind of blackmail material on somebody.
"Blackmail? You think so? But all of that's kind of circumstantial, isn't it...?" Goodbye trailed off, crossing her arms across her chest.{endif}{if Bortnik Killed Himself = 1}
If that wasn't enough, how about the way Operation Sleep Mode had ended, with the doctor's untimely death? Despedida had insisted on getting a look at Ivan Bortnik's cybernetically enhanced brain; during that time, he'd seemingly short-circuited and something inside there had exploded. It was all too convenient; you didn't think Despedida needed to see in there at all. More likely, she'd wanted to either remove her greatest rival in the field of futuristic mechanics, or else, she'd been trying to cover something up. Either way, the events were worthy of intense scrutiny. An agent that CEDIT felt they had more control over would have been brought in for intense questioning.
"Okay, that's... a pretty good point!" Goodbye admitted, adjusting her glasses with a cold sweat running down her forehead.{endif}{if Despedida Affinity > 199}
Despite saying all of this, were you okay with turning your back on Despedida? If CEDIT decided she was the mole and if it was for the good of international security, she wasn't like the other girls; she was not a martial artist or master of self defense. You hoped CEDIT would handle things in a responsible way, but a more rapid means of ending her threat could be decided upon... You asked Goodbye that, in the end, you would be allowed to take care of the matter in your own way.
"I can't promise that, Ciao. You know better than anyone: this mission is of vital importance. It's bigger than you, me, or any of the Goodbye Girls. If worst comes to worst, CEDIT will do what has to be done," she promised with an unusually business-like manner. You sighed deeply in response.{endif}
The rest of the trip was spent busily continuing to discuss the matter. You'd managed to get your minds off of your suspicions earlier, when the plane ride had been pleasant and quiet, only to have that illusion ripped away and your mind returned to the mission.
