Yes, you could most definitely speak spanish. Sure, you were no master at it, but that was more due to your lack of interest. Where you lived, relatively few latinos lived, and the ones you meeted tended to spoke english instead of spanish. Therefore, the lack of custom make it hard for you to understand at first her words.

Thankfully, you were an excelent student, and you remembered the spanish lessons well enough. All it took you was a little memory, and you were ready.
