"Sally, you don't need to say anything right now."

Marcus was walking out of the bedroom. Sally was sitting alone on the bed.

Marcus was walking into the room with a notepad.

"Ok, Sally. You're having trouble remembering things. You're only remembering things that I tell you. You shouldn't panic-"

"What the fuck do you mean, I shouldn't panic?" She shot up from the bed. "What's wrong with me? What's wrong with my memory?"

Marcus was putting his arms on her shoulders. "Panicking will do no good. We need to work together on this." He was gently pushing her back down onto the bed.

He was right, but she hated it. "Easy for you to say, you still have your memory."

Marcus was reading from a notepad. "You shouldn't panic, but we need to take this seriously. It seems like you can only remember statements made by me. You can only answer questions that pertain directly to things you know. Aside from that, anything I say to you does not seem to register."

Only his statements were registering? "That's gonna make working on this together difficult."

Marcus was looking optimistic. "It does, but I think we're developing a system to deal with that."

What was he talking about? "What does? What system?"

Marcus was sighing. "Apparently you can't even remember things you say. That's currently our biggest roadblock to conversation and working through this. The good news is that you seem capable of reasoning and communicating with the facts you know. Also, your memory of everything prior to waking up this morning is intact."

She was thinking. "If I can't remember anything, how long has this been happening?"

"You've been this way since you woke up, about three hours ago."

She's been this way for three hours? She looked around. She was in her bedroom, and Marcus was standing in front of her.

Marcus was sighing. She couldn't remember the things she said?

"How are you even talking to me if I can't remember the things I've said?"

"You've been repeating yourself a lot. It makes conversation very limited. I've been trying to think of a workaround."

She thought for a second. She recalled an exercise she had done in group therapy with some of her kids.

"I've got an idea."

Marcus was looking at her with surprise.

"I've got an idea."

"You should share your idea."

Marcus was waiting on her. She should share her idea. "We could use speech-to text software to capture everything I say, and every time I speak to you you can tell me that I just said what's on the screen."

Marcus was thinking. "You know, that could work."

She was confused. "What could work?"

She should share her idea. "We could use text-to-speech software to capture everything I say. That way you can tell me that I just said what's on the screen and I'll remember what I said."

"You don't need to share your idea." Marcus was leaving the room.

Sally was sitting alone on the bed.
