Chapter 17

OK, talking dog, this is weird, but honestly, shouldn't you be polite?

Well, yes, you should...

"Hi, um, I'm 'Omaha'..." You say extending your hand for the dog to shake, which she does.

"So, you can talk?" You ask after an uncomfortable silence of ten to 15 seconds.

"Yes, and no. If I eat a bowl of alphabet soup with EVERY letter of the alphabet in it, I can talk for about 12 hours, but once all the letters are fully digested I stop being able to talk again, and it only works if the soup contains EVERY letter." Martha explains.

"That sounds rough, but look at it this way, at least you can still eat alphabet soup..." You say, forcibly reminded of your newly reduced diet.

"Yea, sure, but imagine if you had to eat the same thing, every 12 hours, for the rest of your life, or you would lose the ability to speak..." Martha says, poking a stick into the hole in your logic.

"Sounds like we both have it rough." You allow, then try to get back to the job at hand, finding a dog that can do police work with you. "So, Martha, I told Jesus here that I needed a dog I could train to do Police Work, and he said you would be perfect." You explain.

"Well, I've foiled a jewelry heist, as a puppy I was owned by a gang of criminals who I worked to get caught, I've prevented a band of thieves from making counterfeit alphabet soup, worked as a fire-dog, AND briefly been a secret agent, so I would say I'm pretty qualified." Martha says, seeming to warm up to the idea of being your dog.

"You would have to receive further training, and the job will be dangerous. You could get hurt, or even killed." You caution, wanting to make sure Martha is 100% on board before you finalize anything.

"I've been in dangerous situations before, and I understand that being a police officer is risky, but just about anything would be better than being stuck in here! It's kind of a prison you know, except my only crime is not having a place to live and being able to speak part of the time!" Martha says with resignation and annoyance.

So, not the most enthusiastic partner, but, do you think she will work out?
