Chapter 18

So, not the most enthusiastic partner, but, do you think she will work out?

Yes

"Alright Martha, I guess you and I are partners now: Jesus, get the adoption papers and a leash, I'm taking Martha home!" You state confidently, hoping that Martha will warm up once she's out of the crate and be up to the challenge of being a K-9 Officer, although she does indeed seem 'JUST the dog' considering her experience and sapience, not to mention ability to speak...

"Really?!" Martha says a second later, suddenly more enthusiastic than you have seen her this whole time.

"Yes, really, you and I are going to go into police work together! I hope you have a good nose because that's one of the key things the police department looks for in a police dog, but even if you don't there are other parts of the training you could excel at, and no matter what happens you are going to be my dog from now on." You explain, and Martha is bouncing up and down with excitement.

"Oh boy, oh boy, I'm getting Adopted, this is GREAT!" Martha mutters with enthusiasm.

"Now, just come with me for a second." Jesus says and leads you away from the cage to a small office cubical nestled in one corner.

"I want to be one hundred percent sure that you are going to really ADOPT Martha, I only send these special animals to 'forever homes', no matter what happens, you can't give her up for adoption again or put her out on the street." He cautions, pulling a clip board off the wall, one of over a dozen with what look like adoption papers, though a lot more complicated, well over fifteen contract paper length double sided sheets, already filled out with the names of various 'animals'...

"I am sure. I'm probably going to be moving soon but for now my building allows one pet per apartment and I will just look for another building which takes pets or buy a house in the suburbs." You state confidently.

"Alright, remember once all the papers are signed it's a done deal, you will be contractually obligated to keep Martha till she dies, never neglect or **** her, and to feed her the alphabet soup she needs to talk every day unless you don't have money to buy any food at all." He explains one last time, handing you a pen and the clipboard.

"OK, interesting provision there but I will honor it." You state and start signing and initialing where you are bid, noticing right off the bat that some of these provisions of the contract are 'signed' with Martha's paw print... You take a closer look at the contract at that point and realize that some parts of it are written in languages you don't understand, or recognize, but a couple of the provisions you read list a penalty for violating them of: ~The "Adopting Party"'s Immortal Soul becomes property of the A.S.P.C.A. for a period not to exceed 100 years during which it may be utilized as they see fit up to and including actions resulting in it's dissolution, but not bartered, sold, lent, farmed out, rented, or otherwise have it's ownership, possession, or use transferred to any 3rd party.~ This, naturally, alarms you: but as you read more closely you find that the parts written in other languages seem to be the same thing as what is written in English, at least you think so if the parts in English and Latin are any guide, and there are not separate areas to sign on any section which is not one of the 'duplicate' portions, you sign or initial for each multiply redundant segment piece by piece, not one language at a time...

Do you keep signing, ask 'Jesus' to read and explain the contract's provisions, or tear up the contract and flee?
