Chapter 75 by Jpyric Jpyric

Do you sail to victory, or defeat?

Waiting is the hardest part

Author’s note: Short chapter today, and I apologize for the lack of chapters lately, there hasn’t been much time to write. Things will pick up soon!

It’s the fourth day at sea, and there’s a sense of anticipation in the air. Even the water seems to be waiting for something to happen, glassy smooth as far as you can see. Since leaving port, you’ve seen nothing. No ships, not even many animals. Despite that, there’s a feeling that something is about to happen, soon.

You’ve passed the time with planning, both among the crew and with the girls. A big change on this voyage was that most of your original crew was left behind, in favor of those who have more combat experience. Though the ship is less efficient, you know that’s not the concern this time. You’re doubtful that they’re a match for these elite troops you are supposedly facing, but hopefully you can tip the balance.

The plan is largely unchanged, however. You, Ferra, and Alex cut through to take down important targets, spellcasters in particular. You make sure Ferra is aware that this enemy may have weapons that can actually hurt her, and she promises to be careful. Cassie reluctantly agrees to stay behind to heal the wounded, though she clearly wants to join the fight. You remind her that this isn’t just an adventure, but you’re not sure that it sinks in with the excitable chameleon girl.

Melora is another story. She agrees readily to stay out of sight, but she has another request. She wants to learn to defend herself. She explains that she doesn’t like feeling helpless, and with her sight being healed she can learn to handle weapons. You agree that it’s a good idea, and soon Ferra and even Cassie are helping to teach her the basics. It’s quickly apparent that she hasn’t had much experience with athletic activities, and you can see it’s going to be a long road, but you see a marked improvement even in the few hours a day you can spare on the ship.

It’s during one of these training sessions that a cry goes up from the lookout. A ship has been spotted, headed your way. And that can mean only one thing. The time for planning and training is over.

It’s showtime.
