Chapter 12 by jealco jealco

Which path does Venus choose?

Wait until morning

After some contemplation, Venus decided staying at the bridge was probably the best course of action. Travelling through the unnatural darkness with the little equipment she had would be unwise at best. With Moseph actively hunting the necromancer, maybe he would be too occupied to keep more ghouls looking for her. Besides, the last thing they would expect would be for her to hole up where they first caught her.

With that decided, Venus began to survey the bridge for the best spot to hole up. From where she stood on top of the bridge, she could see a short distance in every direction. However, that left her open to the same attack that had gotten her **** under the bridge in the first place. She really didn't fancy being attacked that way a second time.

Venus turned and lightly scaled the side of the bridge, dropping to the edge of the river below. Upon landing, she slipped under the edge of the bridge, cold mud oozing between her toes, and peered into the darkness, looking for a niche in the base of the bridge supports to duck into. A few moments later, she found one, a spot that had been eroded out of the stone supports, and she ducked into it gratefully, pressing her back to the cold wall.

Venus sat there, huddled in the niche, for what seemed like hours, trying to stay vigilant. She dug into her pack, pulling some of her rations out, and eating them half-heartedly. Her near-**** at the hands of the pack haunted her mind, visions of failure and pleasure intermingling in a confusing swirl. After a while, still troubled by those visions, Venus succumbed to the creeping exhaustion of the day's battles, and dozed off.

What, if anything, wakes her before morning?
