Chapter 13 by jealco jealco

What, if anything, wakes her before morning?

Moseph's Kitsune?

Venus abruptly awoke several hours later, to find dawn cracking the horizon. However, the light wasn't what had woken her. Her sharply trained senses had heard something approaching.

Grasping her sword, Venus silently slipped out of her hiding place, eyes and ears open, searching for the source of the sounds. She's suddenly surprised by Moseph's Kitsune, as it appears from the nearby brush.

Lowering her sword, Venus looks at the Kitsune, and asks, "Where's Moseph?"

In response, the Kitsune suddenly began to change, it's form rippling and flowing as it rapidly took on the shape of a human woman. Venus, quite surprised, took a step back in shock, her sword coming to a guard position of it's own accord.

The Kitsune's human form was slightly shorter than Venus, with a beautiful face framed by blonde hair. Her eyes bore none of the astral fire they were known for. Instead, they were the most shocking ice blue Venus had ever seen. Her breasts, while smaller than Venus', were firm, and she had a waistline some noblewomen would die for.

"I mean you no harm," she said. "However, I am the bearer of bad news. Moseph was seriously wounded and captured by the necromancer. He needs your help."

Venus lowered her sword again, quietly considering the Kitsune's words, before replying, "What kind of trickery is this? Moseph is one of the best wizards to ever join the Guild. There's no way a necromancer could do that!"

"Please...I'm telling you the truth. I swear it! I can't save him myself" The Kitsune's eyes flashed with pain and desperation, her voice cracking. Venus, who was watching the Kitsune's face intently, thought she saw a flicker of something else there. Affection, maybe?

"There's more to this than what you say. How do I know you're telling the truth?" Venus' eyes bored into the Kitsune's, daring her to look away.

"You don't. Look, you...you have to help me!" The Kitsune's voice wavered, then cracked. Venus stood silently, her eyes not flinching from the Kitsune's, demanding the answer she wanted through ****-of-will alone.

The Kitsune stared back, emotions flashing across her face almost too fast to see. Venus maintained her stony gaze, refusing steadfastly to give in until she had the answer she desired. Finally, her gaze dropped, and, in a cracking whisper, she said, "I...I...I love him. I love him with...with every fiber of my being." Her voice regained it's strength as she said those words. "I love him in a way I have never loved before. I would do anything, even die, if that's what it took to see him alive, one more time. I can't do this alone, however. The necromancer's pack of ghouls is growing again, and he may be rallying more forces, too. Help me, please...I can't bear the thought of losing him...? The last sentence was barely a whisper, her voice trailing off into silence, her chest heaving as she fought the urge to cry.

Venus continued to study the Kitsune's face, watching a single tear run down it's beautiful face. Venus had never dealt with a Kitsune in person before, and there was precious little known of them. What was known was that ancient stories told of fox-like creatures that could take the form of women, using that ability to seduce and marry men.

Either it was telling the truth, or something had gotten to Moseph in a different way. Venus was unsure which, but she had to make a decision, and soon.

Should she go with the Kitsune now, wait long enough to properly search for any more of her missing equipment, or decline, and return to town?
