Chapter 5

What happens next?

Wait for nightfall

Sometimes the best thing to do was nothing at all. Saria didn't want anyone to see her, so she decided to wait until everyone went to sleep before trying anything daring.

She passed the time for a few hours, walking around the open field and looking around. She could see mountains in the distance, castles, even a fort in the middle of the field. Back when the Great Deku Tree was still alive, Saria used to climb up on his branches to look around, so she recognized the sights, but now they weren't just sights, they were places. It was the difference between looking at the clouds from the ground and looking at them when you could fly up and touch them.

The land grew dark after the sun set, but she didn't know what time people went to bed so she killed a few more hours playing on her Ocarina, walking towards the fort. It was the closest landmark she could see, so she wanted to check it out first. As she walked, she played a few songs she knew, but forest songs didn't feel right in an open field.

So she played some of the songs Link had taught her. He came back to visit her once shortly after leaving, and they spent an afternoon in front of the Forest Temple sharing melodies. She had taught him her song, but because Link didn't have a song of his own, so he taught her others. Zelda's Lullaby, which proved he was a friend to the royal family. Saria had never met a princess before, but after she got something to wear, she might wander that way. Another was Epona's Song, a tune of open fields that helped you summon horses and milk cows. Saria had never met a horse either (or a cow, for that matter), but the song was nice and—

She heard a rhythmic thumping in the distance. Ba-bump! Ba-bump! Ba-bump! It was growing closer, heavier. She saw a dim figure charging toward her in the night, and her fairy Shea flew towards it, illuminating the creature with her light.

It was an animal, with red fur and a white mane, and Saria could see the face of a woman with long hair, even redder, riding on its back. Right before it trampled her, the creature reared up on its hind legs, let out a powerful cry … and stopped.

Saria waited for the beast to attack her and try to eat her, but all it did was bend its long neck down to the ground and start chewing on the grass. It's rider, the red haired woman, had fallen off the creatures back and was lying on her back.

Saria moved around the creature to see if the woman was alright, and noticed two things about her. First, she was beautiful. She had longer hair and larger breasts than Saria, which somehow made her seem like more of a woman. Second, she was completely naked. Maybe people around here didn't bother wearing clothes like the Kokiri? That would make finding something to wear both less embarrassing and more difficult.

Saria knelt down on the grass next to her, and Shea's light illuminated both of them. This close, Saria could see the girl's freckles (cute!), and her blue eyes flashed open to look at her.

"Hello," Saria said gently, not wanting to startle her in case she was hurt. "My name's Saria. What's yours?"
