Chapter 39 by Nom Nom Nom de Plume Nom Nom Nom de Plume

How are you getting out of this?

Try to Fight Them Off

A fight might be dangerous, but it's not like you are without advantages either. They outnumber you 6 to two, but they are spread out and can't get too close. The Weequay speeder bikes are faster, but less sturdy than your speeder, and the slightest bump tends to send a pilot flying. It's also hard to fire a blaster accurately while piloting one, and these don't appear to have built in weapons. Relying on this, you accelerate towards the oncoming bikes, while swerving sharply to make yourself as hard to hit as possible.

You bullseye the lead rider before he makes it to you, and duck down as blaster fire peppers the front of your speeder from the other onrushing bikes. As they blow past, you pick off another with a shot from behind. Tekka is firing wildly, not hitting anything but at least forcing your pursuers to keep an eye on her. Every little bit helps.

The raiders spin around, racing back for another pass. You idle the speeder, keeping low and firing over the dash. By some miracle, your blaster connects with a bike, sending it careening into a second and sending both pilots spinning into the sands. The last two bikes peel off, firing blindly behind them as they flee into the wastes. The good thing about pirates is they don't often see a fight through to the end. Sparks fly as a few bolts connect, but nothing hits you or Tekka.

Besides the damage to the speeder, you've actually come out pretty well. Just as you are congratulating yourself on a job well done, the speeder you had seen earlier roars into view. It is manned by three Weequay; a pilot, a gunner, and a large female standing in the back seat yelling orders. Probably their commander. You gun the engine on your own speeder, preparing to race forward...

Nothing. You hammer the accelerator, flip every switch that may be helpful in any way, but the controls are unresponsive. One of the raiders must have hit something important, and it appears to have killed your engine. Apparently noticing your distress, the Weequay captain screams a war cry, ordering her speeder to circle around you, her gunner firing pot shots while you and Tekka slide as low as you can in your own speeder's cockpit.

While ducking and looking through a hole you are relatively sure wasn't there before, you see a cable swinging free from its connection to the engine. You aren't a mechanic, but that might be what is causing the problem. You can't reach it from here, but if you are fast, someone might be able to run out, reattach the connector, and return to the cabin. It's dangerous, but you can't just sit in here forever either.

Nothing for it. One of you has to go out there, while the other provides covering fire. You're a better shot, but whoever you send out there is probably (almost definately) going to get hurt in the process.

Who is going to fix the engine?
