Chapter 3 by bbcummings bbcummings

Put it back or try the ritual?

Try it of course

"Becky," Luke said, placing his hand on his best friend's shoulder. "Do you trust me."

Becky looked into Luke's warm brown eyes. She first saw those eyes on the first day of Kindergarten, so many years before. He was her oldest friend. Her closest friend.

He seemed so excited. Motivated. Confident. This kind of thing was rare from him. Luke wasn't the ambitious type.

Becky melted.

"Okay," she said.

"Great!" Luke cheered. "I promise you it'll be okay, Bex"

"Alright, it's decided then." Danny said.

They bought the book for ten dollars and split off in anticipation for the next night' festivities.

Luke immediately started to collect the necessary ingredients from around his house, checking in with Danny when he didn't have something at his disposal. Between the two of them, they managed the list quite easily.

He felt a little guilty about pressuring Becky. He had never seen her so worried before. Still, he felt optimistic.

Becky, on the other hand, was just the opposite. She returned home a big ball of nerves. The next night loomed on the horizon like storm clouds. Why had she given in? Her gut never lied.

She reached her room and started changing into something more comfortable, pausing just long enough to inspect herself in the mirror bolted to her door.

She often thought of herself as eighteen going on twelve. She was rail thin with tiny, perky breasts that honestly could have stayed with a training bra with nonnegative effects. She wasn't much better in the butt department either.

She clocked in at just barely five feet, which was no fun when her two closest friends both topped six feet. Her blonde fringe-hairstyle sat unkempt, framing a delicate face and a button nose. She had never been anything more than cute. And then only just.

She thought back to Luke and the swoops feeling his stare had given her. They were friends. Only friends. In fact, Becky had never been in a relationship of any kind. She often wondered about Luke. The attraction seemed there sometimes, but was it worth ruining their friendship?

Becky shook her head and finished changing. She needed to get her mind off that damn book.

Was there anyway to stop this inevitable ritual?
