Chapter 2 by nyolotto
Where should she go?
To The Campus Grounds
Feeling like she needed some fresh air, Iris left her apartment, and walked out to the college grounds. It was more like a large park than any other campus she had seen, but that was because the college was big on environmentalism and wanted students to be able to enjoy nature between classes. As Iris was looking for a place to sit down, she saw the campus security guard, Officer Band (who always insisted that students call him 'Alan'), was hanging from a tree branch, doing something that looked like sit-ups. Curious, Iris walked over and sat near the tree he was hanging from.
Alan was in peak physical condition, and had shaved blonde hair. Though he wore sunglasses whenever he could, Iris had seen him without them once, and the dark circles under his blue eyes showed that he was older than he initially appeared. He had, in fact, been working for the college for fifteen years.
"What are you doing, Officer Alan?" Iris asked him.
Alan paused for a second to see who was talking to him and grinned at Iris. "Just taking a break, gotta make sure I'm not slacking off, you know? Every moment I'm working, I either need to be protecting the students, or making myself more capable of protecting them. I'd be a major letdown if I was too weak to punch out a mugger."
"I suppose that makes sense. It seems like it would be easier and safer to do sit-up on the ground though, wouldn't it?" She asked him as she sat down on the ground near his tree.
"Yeah, it'd be safer, but my safety is not important, and I've fallen before. I just get right back up and keep on working out." Alan watched Iris when he was on a downward turn from his upside-down sit-ups, and noticed that she seemed a bit troubled. With ease, he flipped himself from the branch and crouched beside her. "You okay? It's my job to make sure all students are safe, and if someone is bothering you, just tell me, and they'll pay for it."
Iris shook her head a bit. "Oh, no one is bothering me but myself. Ever since my birthday, I've felt the urge to go and find a boyfriend. The problem is, I don't know how. I don't know any guys!"
Alan frowned. "That's not true, you know plenty of dudes! I'm a dude, that coffee shop dude is a dude, you got dudes in your class, just talk to one of them. Shit, if I wasn't so busy working and partying all the time, I'd ask you out myself. But you need a guy better than me, right? One with lots of brains and stuff?"
What does Iris say to him?
