Chapter 34
by Nom Nom Nom de Plume
What's behind curtain number one?
An Offer You Can't Refuse
The curtain is drawn, revealing a richly dressed woman. You'd guess her to be in her mid thirties, with long dark hair and a full figure. Her fair skin is tanned, but not weathered like most on this planet. She doesn't work out in the sun, that's for sure. Her dress cuts away at the shoulders, chest, and stomach. You'd guess they are ostensibly to help keep cool on this planet, but they reveal a distracting amount of smooth, tanned skin.
She takes a seat before one is offered. Definately confidant. The large Gamorean who pulled back the curtain, and remains standing at the entrance, probably helps things.
"My name is Naraya, and I represent certain powerful individuals here on Tatooine. I watch my benefactor's interest here in Mos Espa, and you, Mr. Marks, have caught my eye."
That screams crime lords. On Tatooine, that means Hutts. You'll have to talk with Tekka about accepting gifts from mobsters without consulting you first.
"She's the real deal," Tekka whispers in your ear. "When she offered the dancing girl, I checked around. According to the rumours, she used to be a dancing girl girl at Jabba's palace, but over the last decade has killed or seduced her way up the ranks of his organization."
You'll have to talk with her about openly discussing mobsters' history at the bargaining table too, but if Naraya heard or took offense she doesn't show it.
"Well, I've caught your eye, and you've caught my attention. What can I do for you?"
"This city used to be under the control of Gardulla Besadii, but recent events have seen her vacate her holdings here. In his benevolence, the illustrious Jabba Desilijic Tiure has been working to bring order back to the city."
So one sleazy gangster drove another sleazy gangster out of town, and is now consolidating his power. Got it.
"To do so, he has spent a considerable amount of his personal finances. All he has asked in return, was a token sum from the local moisture farmers. A small tax on water, to help keep everyone safe and contribute to the prosperity of this fair city."
Jabba has set up a protection racket. Not unheard of out in the Rim.
"Unfortunately, some moisture farmers are trying not to pay their fair share. My regular forces aren't getting the job done, but having a man such as the famous Corvin Marks come around will show them how serious we are about maintaining order." So, a power play to keep the poor folks in line long term. Your fee would dwarf whatever pittance the farmers are holding out on. "You'll be paid for your work of course, and Jabba frequently contracts bounty hunters to work on a generous retainer. I think you might be an excellent candidate, and would be willing to put in a recommendation."
"How very kind. Unfortunately, I think shaking down farmers might be... I don't want to say beneath me, but..."
Naraya nods graciously. "Oh, I understand. You can always turn down Jabba's generous offer to help bring order here." She's now smiling sweetly at you. "But you should know that once Jabba has shown interest, other employers might think twice about trying to hire you out from underneath him." And now smiling, but less sweetly, she rests her chin on folded hands. "And with things as they are now, it may be difficult to leave and find work elsewhere. If the farmers don't do their part, who is to say the spaceport workers will do their's? That's how accidents happen. Explosive accidents."
Well shit. That narrows your options here. In hindsight, having a highly trained dancer fall into your lap may have been a stall tactic for a team to fuck with your ship while you were occupied.
As you're thinking, you feel stroke against your inner thigh. A weird time for that, Tekka, but a glance over shows the Twi'lek is focused on this conversation.
"Besides, I assure you the fee will be worth your while. And I think working together can be a... pleasurable experience. Don't you?"
Ah. It would appear Naraya has inconspicuously snaked her foot across the table. Judging by the surprising dexterity with which she is stroking you through your pants, she's fairly skilled with the rewards she is implying here.
Holding up farmers for pocket change isn't the most exciting (or dignified) work. But the pay is good, and there's some potential for fun with your new employer. You also have no doubt this woman is willing to have you murdered without a second thought (or that she already has your ship sabotaged in some way).
Do you take this deal?
