Chapter 7

What happens next?
The work day drags by.
On your way back to your desk, you make sure to give Jan a friendly little wave and a smile. Maybe you can gradually wear down her resentment for you over time. Every little bit helps. You don't hang around to watch the number over her head because you don't want to freak her out. Back at your desk, you check the AMA for Jan's profile. Like you expected, it's updated with a picture of Jan. Her stern but attractive face looks back at you.
- Whetstone, Jan - Affection Score: -45. - History: Tuesday, 12:57 pm (+1)
Well, look at that. Just a little friendliness earned you a point. Maybe if you get her score high enough, you can ask her for a promotion or a raise...
Having slacked off most of the day, you get some work done. Things can pile up quickly around here. Behind you, Hana also works away. The rest of the day passes without much interaction. At exactly 5pm, Hana gets up to leave. She grabs her things and then pauses by your desk.
"Well, see you tomorrow, Frank. It was good to finally get to know you."
"I know right? I feel bad that it took so long."
She smiles at you and starts to leave.
Wanting to continue the conversation and possibly raise your score, you stop her, "Hey Hana."
She turns around and waits for you to continue talking.
"There's no rush on my offer to rent you a couple of rooms. It's completely up to you. Could be tomorrow. Could be next year. The offer stands. I just didn't want for you to think that you had to decide any time soon."
She laughs, "I said that I'll think about it Frank but I need to go."
"Where you off to?"
"Well I'm gonna get a workout in and then head home."
You feel kind of creepy asking all of these questions but it's not like she's going to hold it against you...
"Where do you workout at?"
She gives you a perplexed look, "Uhhh… here. It's easiest and free."
"This place has a gym? I didn't know that."
"Well that explains why people are never there... Nobody knows about it. It's on the bottom floor on the western side. You should check it out."
"I'd just embarrass myself..."
"Oh don't be ridiculous. Usually it's just me there after work and I'm not gonna make fun of you or anything like that. Really the only other person that I see there is Jan but she usually works late and doesn't get there until I'm leaving."
This could be an opportunity.
"You promise you wouldn't laugh?"
"Promise. I could even give you a few pointers but it's not like I'm an expert or anything like that."
"You know, I might take you up on that tomorrow. Do you go every day?"
"Yup."
"I'll think about it. Sorry for keeping you. See you tomorrow."
"See ya, Frank."
You look above her head as she walks away. The green 26 is replaced by a 29. This is so easy. If you make sure to spend as much time with Hana as you can, her score will be pretty high in no time. You wonder if you can keep up the pace or if it slows down once you get to the higher numbers.
Normally you would head out at this time but you actually have an incentive to stay now. Maybe staying late will help you with Jan. You'll just have to make sure that she sees you working late. Luckily, there's enough to do to keep you busy. Before getting back to work, you pull out your phone to text your wife that you'll be working late. Something catches your eye. The AMA app is on your phone too. If the Affection Multiplier was anything less than extraordinary, you'd be freaked the fuck out. Instead, you are strangely comforted knowing that it's always with you.
Around 6:30 pm, there are only a few people left in the office. Jan is one of them. You stand up and peer over the sea of desks to confirm it. Through the glass wall of her office, she appears to still be busy working. Compelled mostly by your hunger, you get up to leave. As you approach Jan's office on your way out, she briefly looks up and you make eye contact. Once again, you give her a friendly smile and wave. Heading downstairs, you pull out your phone to see if it worked. Surely enough, Jan's score has changed to -40. Holy shit. That brief interaction earned you 5 points? Maybe the key to improving your affection score with Jan is just working late. It makes sense. Jan's whole life appears to revolve around her job. If she sees you putting in extra time, that could work better than anything.
Now on the ground floor of your building, you decide to have a look around. Maybe Hana is still in the gym. You wander down a hallway that you've never been down before and find it tucked into a corner at the end. There are also a couple of locker rooms. Yet to see anyone in this area, you open the door to the gym and look inside. It's small but pretty nice. There are a dozen or so different machines and treadmills. One wall is entirely windows. Outside you can see the courtyard that you were in earlier. Hana is on an elliptical and notices your arrival.
Pulling out her earbuds she waves at you and says, "Thought you were coming tomorrow?"
"Yeah I just thought that I'd have a look around. Didn't realize you'd still be here."
Mesmerized, you watch Hana for a minute. She's wearing a t-shirt and some short cut athletic shorts. They really show off her legs. Hana appears to be in pretty good shape but she still has some meat on her bones. She isn't really a petite girl. Your eyes find her shapely bottom and stick there as she continues her workout.
Looking at you out of the corner of her eye, she says, "You just gonna stand there and stare at me?"
Breaking out of your trance, you say, "What? Oh... sorry. It's just that you're really getting after it. I'm impressed."
Normally if you just got caught openly checking this girl out, you'd panic and apologize profusely. With the app now in your pocket, you just play it cool.
She laughs, "I'm not sure about that but I give it my best."
"I can tell. You've worked up quite a sweat."
Hana stops her workout and steps off of the elliptical. Beads of sweat drip down her face. A sweat stain covers the backside or her little grey shorts and around the collar of her shirt. She walks towards you.
"Can you hand me one of those towels?"
Not realizing that you are standing in front of a rack of clean towels, you grab one and hand it to her. She takes it and wipes off her face. Since she's now close to you, there's an aroma in the air. It must be her sweat but it doesn't smell bad at all.
"Thanks. If you think I work hard, you should see Jan. She runs on the treadmill like a maniac. I'm talking like several miles at almost a sprint. She must have been a competitive runner or something like that."
"So you two are going to put me to shame, eh?"
She says with a smirk, "Maybe at first but you'll improve."
"With you as my trainer, I'm sure I will."
Hana tosses the sweaty towel in a basket and says, "Alright I'm gonna clean up and get out of here. I'll see you tomorrow or are you going to keep stalking me?"
The grin on her face lets you know that she's not actually annoyed. You watch her wipe down the elliptical with a wet wipe.
"Haven't decided yet. You're fun to stalk."
Hana snorts back laughter and you look above her head for a score update. You nearly do a fist pump when you see that it's changed to a green 36.
Playfully, she says, "Well just don't follow me into the locker room. Might scare the shit out of Jan if she shows up."
As if on cue, the gym door opens and Jan enters wearing a pair of track pants and a sweatshirt. She stops dead in her tracks when she sees you.
Quite rudely, she says, "What are you doing here?"
Putting on your friendly smile, you reply, "I'm going to start working out with Hana after work tomorrow. She's been nice enough to offer to help me get into shape. I just wanted to come down here first and check it out."
"Well if you two are done, I'd appreciate some privacy."
Hana gives you a look and you follow her out of the small gym, leaving Jan alone. She starts to walk into the women's locker room but you stop her.
"Hey. Do you think we can exchange phone numbers real quick?"
She stops and says, "I suppose so. Here. Give me your phone."
You wait for her to finish typing her number into your contacts. The number above her head has changed once again. Now it's a green 38. She gives you one last smile and enters the locker room, leaving you alone in the hallway.
