What's next?
The third date
"Ok," she whispered. "I'm here." I wasn't sure if you'd come," Marcus said softly, his deep voice vibrating through the space between them. He didn't reach for her, respecting the invisible wall she had built around herself.
"Kalvin told me I should," she whispered, her blue eyes darting toward the pavement.
Marcus chuckled, a sound of genuine affection. "He’s a good friend to have in your corner."
The third date was dinner at Marcus’s favorite upscale restaurant, followed by a quiet walk through the campus gardens. The air was cool, but Nikki felt flushed. Marcus moved with a graceful, heavy confidence that made every step he took feel deliberate.
When they stopped beneath a sprawling oak tree, the silence between them was thick with unspoken tension. Marcus turned to her, his height making her feel impossibly tiny. He reached out, his large, warm hand cupping her cheek with a gentleness that caused her breath to hitch.
"You’ve been quiet again tonight," Marcus said, his voice a rich, grounding hum.
"I’m just… nervous," she confessed, her eyes darting to the strong line of his jaw.
Marcus stepped closer, closing the distance until his chest was inches from her reaching curves. "You don't have to be. I’m not going to rush you, Nikki. I just want to be with you."
She remembered Kalvin’s words—let go of the control. She looked up at Marcus, feeling the overwhelming gravity of him, and for the first time, she didn't step back. Instead, she took a shaky breath and nodded, a silent surrender that made Marcus’s eyes darken with intent.
The weight of the evening air felt heavy against Nikki’s skin as she stood outside the entrance of Marcus’s house once again. Her blonde hair fell neatly over her shoulders, but her hands were trembling, tucked deep into the pockets of her coat. She wanted to turn around and walk back to the safety of her dorm, but the echo of Kalvin’s voice played on a loop in her mind.
“You’re allowed to have fun, Nikki. Marcus is a good man. Just let go for once.”
She didn’t understand why Kalvin was so invested in her dating life, but his unwavering support had given her a fragile sense of courage.
"Nikki," Marcus said, looking right into her eyes. The porch light caught the sharp planes of his face. He reached out, his hand hovering near the small of her back before he gently touched her arm. "I know things move fast for some people, but I want to take this at your pace. Truly."
Nikki looked up at him, her lips parted slightly. The shyness that usually paralyzed her was battling with a strange, burgeoning curiosity. She looked at his large, powerful hands, then up at his kind eyes. She thought of Kalvin’s encouragement, the way he had insisted she shouldn't be afraid.
She took a tentative step forward. "I'm still nervous," she admitted, her voice trembling.
"That's okay," Marcus breathed, closing the distance between them. He leaned down, his face mere inches from hers. "You don't have to do anything you aren't ready for."
When he kissed her this time, it wasn't a tentative peck. It was slow and deliberate. Nikki felt the familiar surge of panic rise in her chest, but she forced herself to breathe. She recalled Kalvin’s words—let go. She leaned into him, her hand slowly exploring body.
Marcus let out a low, shaky breath against her lips, his hand sliding firmly to her waist, pulling her flush against his solid frame. The contact was electric. Nikki felt the sheer difference in their sizes—her petite frame against his towering, athletic build. She felt his strength, and for the first time, instead of recoiling, she felt a strange, quiet tether pulling her toward him.
She wasn't sure what she was doing, or where this would lead, but as Marcus deepened the kiss, her own heart began to race with a rhythm she had never felt before. She didn't pull away. She stood there, sheltered by his size, wondering if she was finally stepping into the life Kalvin had been nudging her toward all along.
Marcus opened the door, and gently leads Nikki inside.
