The car ride

“so Wendy when was the last time you went shopping?” Trying to start some small talk

“A long time ago I don’t really remember”

“Than I guess I’ll have to make this a good memory than” I place a hand on her soft thigh and smile. “Also I think I’ll have to get you a gift as a belated birthday present for 6 years”

She’s surprised by the sudden hand on her thigh and places her hands over on mine. “You don’t have to get anything, just spending time with you is good enough” she smiles softly

“Nonsense! Come on Wendy I’m getting you something just tell me so I can get you what you like. Also when is your birthday?”

She smiles and rubs her neck with a hand “it’s actually today why did you think I had today off and I only have 2 more days off this year? Also anything will do.”

Wait today is her birthday? Oh wow I better make this a great memory for her than.

“Wait so you’re 19 now?”

“Oh um 18 actually” she smiles.

“Sweet 18? Oh wow I need to get you a cake and throw you a party!”

“No no no! Please I just want to spend time with you. And you don't need to get me anything”

“Nope I’m definitely getting you something also are you ok with us being in your house tonight? I have some construction I need to do in my room.”

“Yes I think that’s fine but it’s not very fancy or anything and I don’t want to make you uncomfortable in my house but if you real-“ I interrupt her with a kiss at a red light

“Don’t worry about it I can’t be uncomfortable with you” After the kiss she turns a bright shade of pink.

"Oh yeah I think I need to get you a cellphone you didn't have one in your house or with you."

"I guess it would be a good gift" she smiles

"what? oh no this isn't the gift I'm actually getting it for you in case you need to contact me. You know, because you work for me now remember? I'm getting you a different gift later"

"I guess that's fine I know I won't be able to stop you" She pouts

"I'm going to make this the best birthday you've every had" I smile and we have other conversation and I learn a lot more about her and I just feel horrible that I didn't notice how much she is suffering. I'm going to do everything in my power to make her happy from now on.

"I love you John" she says after a long time of small talk and teasing and as we pull into the parking lot.

after parking, I pause for a moment. "I love you too Wendy" and I pull her in for another kiss. This time she kisses back with an unseen amount of passion. We kiss for half a minute I think? I lost track of time and when we let go, we smile at each other.

We get out of the car and I hold my hand out for her to hold. She grabs it and we practically skip into the mall.
