Chapter 9 by Thorn_ Thorn_

Where to begin?

The arena should be the center of attention.

"Fighting arena is for fighters. We're fighters." The masterful deductive skills at your disposal are not lost on her. "Let's go." With that out of the way, it's a march to another gate defended by two people in golden armor who say nothing as you pass through and into a lobby filled with players of every type and monsters ranging from ogres to ooze creatures that seem content not to attack anything here.

While some of these people are decked out in armor that glows around them, others have simple gear and don't look powerful. Any impulse to attack them right here, is dismissed with all of these people here and even with your new abilities, even your mind can tell that you'd stand no chance against his many as you are now.

All of them are wrapped in various conversations, but approaching the desk a girl with a calm expression, places out a paper. She's about to say something as she takes a glance at the two of you before her face resumes back to it's neutral pose. "Would you like to hear the rules of the arena before you register?"

"How does this thing work?" With all that's going on, it's an important question to ask and she seems accepting of it. "Players can compete against both enemy A.I. and other players. The rankings are separate. Unlike PVP outside of the arena, there are rewards for rankings and win streaks. When fighting A.I monsters, the rules are a little different. All monsters to the arena are unique. If players lose to them a lot, they can rank up the same as players can. With increased ranking, they will become stronger but will also provide better rewards if they are defeated."

"Can we register?" You ask the question and she gives a nod and she actually has a smile on her face while she does it. "Anyone can. Normally, most combat is done one on one even for A.I monsters except for special occasions. I think this will be one of them. Dual bosses are pretty popular for that. Especially twins. I don't doubt the programmers will want to screw over the players like that."

If it's going to work out in your favor, it's hard to find that you could care what happens to them. Your double, steps up to table and looks impatient. "Okay cool. Can we start killing things yet?" The receptionist doesn't move from her spot and simply stares.

"A few things first, to be clear on. The winning player can determine the fate of the loser. For players this would be killing or sparing. But for opponents in the game, players can actually take them as pets for a little while. As you're just starting at the arena, you don't get any power bonuses yet and will start at the rank of ****. Understood?"

"Talking too much. Bored." That's the only proper reaction that can be given but she doesn't seem to mind. "If you two would like to begin, you need to be unique from common enemy A.I. You must have names to register." A name? That means standing out from the other creatures and if things go well here, it's a big deal to finally be a known enemy instead of a faceless mook. Yet. This doesn't seem like an answer to all problems when there is the risk of ending up dead or as someone's pet if you lose.

Is it worth risking turning into a potential pet ?
