The Void

Looking back on what the Headmaster had said you didn’t really know what to say or do now that you were alone again. It was scary you were an outcast with incredible powers and high magic potential and yet you felt out of your depth. You needed a distraction studying was out as you had already studied yourself into yourself into the ground. But then again taking another peek at that Void book you checked out wouldn’t hurt right.

Taking the book out you sat in a clearing within the Forest of Dread alone. Surprisingly often or not nobody came here or tried to but by the looks of this clearing it looked like it had been used for various things if the scratches and other magical damage were any signs. Taking the book out you began to read. The first chapter had explained theories as to what the void ranging from a corrupted dimension to another form of darkness to pure evil. However the most common and widely accepted theory was that the void was the space between darkness and the light a place of nothingness a void.

Setting the book aside you looked at your hand before closing your eyes and trying to feel the void. The twins had told you not try reaching for the void until you got back from winter break but they never said you couldn’t practice.

You reached out and searched from something anything to feel the void. But instead you soon felt nothing no heat nor the wind hell not even the cool breeze simply nothing. Opening your eyes yourself in a gigantic library where an old man sat reading a text.

Closing the book the old man looked at you surprised before giving you a warm smile and speaking. “I wondered how long it would take you a month, a year, a decade perhaps?” He shook his head before continuing. “Instead it took you less than a week Nathan to discover and open your connection to the void and me.” The old man stopped studying you before speaking again. “I am sure your confused and scared just like I was but allow me to introduce myself my name is Dr. César Rodríguez your predecessor.”

The room was silent as Nathan digested the information the man who had been the last void elementalist before him stood in his very presence but then again he had died a 100 years ago how the hell was he standing right here. The doctor however broke the silence “I am sure you have many questions Nathan but let me boil it down for you. I am one of your past lives you see the void a sentient being one full of mystery that none of our past lives know for certain about.”

Crossing the distance the Doctor placed his hand on young Nathan’s shoulder. “Know this my boy you can trust me I have seen your life here in the void and I know what you have suffered yes every moment the others and I know you and the injustice you have suffered but know this the actions of ancestors don’t define you.” Walking back to his chair the doctor put the book away before sitting down once more pouring himself a cup of tea before speaking again. “I am sure you have questions go on ask away we have all the time in the world.”

Looking around Nathan was awestruck at the vast library that sat behind the doctor mouth agape before he spoke. “What is this place Doc?” Cesar smiled before replying. “Currently we are in the void the space between light and darkness the border between known and unknown an infinite space filled with countless possibilities where the laws of physics and life are no longer valid or As those who tread the line between light and darkness are not bound by the laws of man nor the universe.”

Nathan stood silent as he contemplated the quote before speaking. “Didn’t Roh'demus Eldric say that back before another of my past lives discovered more on the void?” The doctor simply smiled before a tall burly man with a ling grey beard and what looked to be ancient mage robes appeared from out of the bookshelves.

“Da you are correct young one it was back in the time of my people long before the how you say in your tongue civil war in my country.” The man said in a heavy Russian accent. Looking up the Nathan stared at the man before he spoke again. “Forgive me young one my name is Roh'demus Eldric but you can call me Dimitri yes?”

Looking the man over Nathan shook the older Russian’s hand before he spoke. “Dimitri you wouldn’t be willing to teach me Russian would you? I have an instructor coming from Russia and I don’t really know Russian can you help me?”

Roh'demus smiled saying something in Russian before replying in English. “Da it would be an honor to teach you my mother tongue young one however we will do this another time as your first time in the void can be quite strenuous. Nathan raised an eyebrow before Doctor Cesar stepped in.

“What he means is that this is your first time in the void and you have get back to the material world soon as your magical body is not used to being separated from your physical body for extended periods of time not yet anyway but don’t worry Nathan we have much to discuss until then.”

With those parting words Nathan saw darkness engulf him before he woke up covered in snow looking behind him he saw his white knight standing on guard hand holding out a war cup of what smelled like hot chocolate before Nathan closed the book and took the hot chocolate muttering a thank you.
