The Road North

I road for Fairhaven reaching it shortly before dawn. It looked a lot like Hunters Rest as several buildings were under construction outside of the fort which looked mostly finished or at the very least defensible. Not that it needed with the number of tents across the river. The flags scattered about showed dozens of different banners. I had to wait a little bit before Cassandra showed up with a small contingent of four men. I hope we didn't need them but it was better to have them and not need them then to need them and not have them as my father would say.

We made good time as we rode. Trying not to push the horses to hard while trying to cover as much ground as we could. We might have road through the night as well but the weather had other ideas so we stopped at a tavern. There was no one inside having been abandoned only recently but it still had a stable for the horses and beds for us.

I made myself comfortable in one of the rooms and found a lantern that worked so I sat down reading. The rain poured down hard outside as the wind howled and lightening flashed through the window. A knock came at the door and then the Lady Cassandra came in.

"My lady." I stood up.

"Thought I saw a light in here." She smiled and came in closing the door behind her. "I can't sleep. But I found something that might help." She said holding up two mugs and had a cask under her arm. "Care to join me?"

"Sure my lady." I nodded. I held the cask and poured as she held the mugs. We toasted and drink. She coughed a little since it was really strong.

"Sadly that also means that I will most likely marry soon after." She frowned.

"Most people like my father but becoming king and staying king or two different things. I will be married to assure a strong alliance with one of the other houses. "We could always get Kasar to help smuggle you off somewhere." I teased.

"The way she looked at me I think she would have other ideas." Cassandra shook her head.

"Hey, at least the trip will be free." I shrugged.

"I hope so. There is money involved so I trust she will do what is in her best interest."

"What about you. Why are you doing this?"

"Hell if I know." I shrugged taking another drink. "A few months ago I was helping pull tree stumps out of the ground so my village would have more ground to plant more crops in the spring. Now I am having a drink with a beautiful noble woman soon to be princess."

"Very." I nodded.

"You know Seren told me about what you two did. Every little detail." She gave a playful smile.

"I am sure, as thick as thieves you two are." I raised my mug and drank.

"I will have to take your word for that."

"Care to show me or do I have to get you really drunk first?" She smiled.
