And so...
The Party battle the Eldrathar Warden
The room seemed to pulse with the weight of the Eldrathar Warden’s presence. Its massive form towered above us, every movement causing the ground to tremble beneath our feet. Torin was already in the thick of it, his greatsword crashing against the Warden’s massive stone blade with the **** of a mountain collapsing. The sound of their clash reverberated through the chamber, each strike sending shockwaves.
Aelira was fast, nimble, and precise. She fired arrows from her bow with lightning speed, each one finding its mark, though they merely bounced off the Warden's stone-like armor. She gritted her teeth in frustration. Her strikes were quick and sharp, aiming for any weak points she could spot on the stone behemoth. She did manage to pierce through but the arrows sailed through the creature's glowing, blue magic inside.
Lilith moved like a shadow, already flanking the Warden as she positioned herself behind the creature. Her daggers flashed in the dim light, aiming for the Warden’s joints, the delicate places where magic might be weakest. But each strike was met with resistance—stone and magic fought against her just like Aelira. Lilith’s expression flickered with growing annoyance.
"FOCUS ON ITS BLOODY LEGS!" Torin shouted, his voice filled with excitement as he swung his sword in a powerful overhead arc, striking the Warden's side with an ear-splitting crunch. The creature howled, a sound like grinding stone, and stumbled back. "WE CAN HIT 'EM WITH RAW ****!"
The Warden countered with a swipe of its colossal sword, the blade crackling with blue magical energy as it swung downward toward Torin. He barely had time to raise his own sword in defence before the massive strike collided with his weapon, sending him flying backward across the chamber. Dust and debris exploded into the air as Torin slammed against the wall. Before I could rush to Torin, a shuffling noise sounded out behind me.
Goblins.
They were emerging from the deeper passages, their eyes wild with hunger and greed, drawn by the scent of battle. I watched as their numbers quickly growed, eyes glinting with malice as they huddled at the edges of the chamber's entrance, trapping us within. There were at least a dozen of them, and they were coming fast - armed with rusted blades, jagged axes and makeshift spears.
A sense of panic hit me. The Warden was a formidable opponent, but if the goblins were left unchecked, they would swarm our Party in a matter of moments. With a quick glance towards Aelira and Lilith fighting the Warn, I made a decision. I couldn't let these goblins overwhelm us anymore than we already were.
I stepped forward, pulling Ishi's sword from its sheath. The blade was still cool to the touch and reminded me of Ishi's knowledge and teachings. It was time to put them to the test.
The first goblin lunged at me with a crude axe, but I was already moving. I stepped to the side, my sword sweeping low and fast, cutting through the goblin’s legs with a clean, decisive strike. It fell to the ground, howling in pain, but I couldn't stop. Another goblin came at me with a jagged spear. I leapt over the attack, spinning around to strike with my blade in a wide arc, slashing clean through its torso. The creature crumpled to the floor, dead before it even hit the ground.
But they kept coming.
I danced around them, feeling Ishi's words guiding my every move. The goblins were no match for my speed and precision. Each time they swung their weapons, I were already a step ahead—my body moving with fluid grace, like a whirlwind of ****. A third goblin charged at me, swinging a rusted sword overhead. I met it head-on, twisting in a blur and catching the goblin's sword with my own, before pulling it to the side with a flick of my wrist. In one swift motion, I stepped in close and drove my blade into the creature’s side, ending its life in a single strike.
But there were still too many of them.
I spun around, seeing a goblin had snuck up behind me. Time slowed down and I felt shadows bend to my will. Once again, I felt the control magic of Karnath within me, urging me to speak.
"FALL!" I screamed.
The goblin suddenly fell over. I barely avoided an incoming blow from the fourth goblin, before finishing it off with a swift strike to its throat. As I became more surrounded, I felt myself using my control magic more and more. FREEZE, WAIT, STAY - all these commands I shouted to gain the upper hand. I moved like a shadow, my sword slicing through them in quick, precise movements.
As the last of the goblins fell, I stood in the centre of the room, chest heaving and blood splattered across my clothing. The remaining goblins lay in scattered heaps around you, their crude weapons abandoned. I grimaced - each kill was a necessary act, I reasoned with myself.
Turning back to the others, I saw that the fight with the Warden had escalated.
Torin had recovered from the Warden’s earlier blow, his face flushed with the thrill of battle. He swung his greatsword once more, but this time, there was something different—his strike was fueled by the weight of his rage. The blade collided with the Warden’s side with a tremendous crash, sending sparks flying as the stone behemoth staggered back.
But the Warden wasn’t finished.
It roared again, a sound that reverberated through my very bones. It swung its massive sword in a wide arc, targeting both Torin and Aelira at the same time. The impact of the blow was immense, sending them both flying across the room. Torin landed heavily, his armour damaged and in chucks. Aelira’s graceful form absorbed the **** of the impact, rolling to her feet almost instantly and her dress in tattered rips. Her tall, slender body showed through, giving me a peak at her perky nipples and thin stomach. Ignoring her appearance, she raised her bow already in hand and fired another volley of arrows.
Lilith, however, was nowhere to be seen. The Warden had become more aware of her stealthy strikes, and now, she darted in from behind, aiming for its joints once again. She was fast, but the creature’s stone body seemed to be resistant to even her most skillful attacks. It roared in irritation and lashed out, knocking her backward out of sight.
Aelira paused, then cursed. She reached beneath her robe and produced a small, golden bottle. She poured it over several arrows and fire, each arrow struck the Warden's weak joints with pinpoint accuracy.
Suddenly, the Warden was pulled to the chamber's floor. The now golden arrows Aelira had fired pulled it's body down, pinning it down like chains. Torin appeared out of the dust of his crash, swinging his sword in a furious arc, but this time, aiming to open the creature's insides. His sword pierced the stone body and with his hand, pulled the stone apart ever so slightly.
"NOW!" Torin bellowed.
Out of nowhere, Lilith sprung up and landed beside Torin. Inside, a dark navy sphere circled amidst the Warden's blue magic within. Torin roared a mighty sound, his arms shaking under the might of holding open the Warden's stone body. Seeing the opening, Lilith plunged her dagger at the sphere, shattering it as if it were glass.
The Warden's body glowed with the same bright, blue light from the stone alter. Then, it stopped. The stone body crumbled, collapsing into a heap of large rocks. The light disappeared and left us standing there, unsure whether it was really over. After several minutes, Torin slowly turned his head to Aelira.
"I 'hink the bastard is dead."
Aelira nodded shakily as Torin and Lilith climbed down the small, rocky mound. Torin grinned, yet looked utterly exhausted. Aelira too seemed drained, her stance not as tall as before. Lilith bent over, wiping blood pooling from a wound on her arm.
"I can't believe you used Forlarn's Potion..." Lilith panted.
"Well I didn't exactly want to either. But we weren't looking good, were we?" She snapped back.
Torin shrugged. "We would've got 'em in the end, don't ya stress."
Aelira groaned before seemingly to realise I still was there. "Oren, what..."
The group looked in surprise at the group of goblins slayed around me. I sheathed my sword and walked over, feeling drained myself.
"How did you that? I thought you were a newbie?" Lilith pressed, her nearly naked body almost impossible to not look at.
"Luck, I guess." I lied, not looking at her.
Aelira held my gaze, her eyes narrowing. She seemed about to say something before Torin slapped my back, causing me to groan in pain.
"HAHA! Look at the boy, he's one real 'ough warrior!" He chuckled.
Lilith had already left us, approaching the throne that was at the chambers back. But she suddenly stopped as if someone pushed her. She tried again, only to be stopped. She raised her arms and seemed to be pushing air and being stopped by...something?
The rest of us marched over as Lilith cursed. "I can't get through. Some sort of protection spell in place..."
As Lilith pressed again, something caught my eye. The stone alter in the chamber's centre glowed with each of her movements.
"The alter, it's glowing every time you try to move ahead Lilith." I say.
We all turn and head to the stone alter. As we peered in, a message was etched along its outside. I bent down, reading out loud.
"I am a gift, a price to pay,
To break a spell, and clear the way.
On stone I rest, a chilling plea,
Life for passage, you must agree."
I pause, the last words falling from my lips. This can't be? If I'm reading this right, the alter requires us to sacrifice a life to pass through?
"There has to be a mistake. There's no way we can-"
I'm cut off by a dagger against my throat. I slowly turn to see Lilith, her eyes glinting.
"I wouldn't move, little one." She cooes.
I turn to Torin, who gives me his signature grin. But not longer it is a confident, joyful expression. This time, it has a sinister undertone.
"Torin, help me!" I plead.
"Sorry kid. No hard feelings..." Torin smirked.
I then looked to Aelira. Surely, she would be on my side. Instead, she regarded me with a cold stare she had reserved for others.
The Party had betrayed me...
