What's next?
The Movie
You had a vague idea where the new theater was but you didn't know exactly. You were in no rush so you begin driving around the unfamiliar city. The pair of you sight see and comment on the old buildings and other sights. At one point you are driving down what had to be the hip artsy part of town. Small specialized boutiques, restaurants and galleries line the street and a few buskers can be seen on the sidewalks. You notice a rundown little art house theater, there happens to be someone leaving their parking spot right out in front of it. On a lark you pull into the spot they vacated.
"Well. It's not state of the art, and I doubt they have an arcade, but it's right here." You offer.
El is looking out the window at it. "I love it. Let's see what's playing."
The sidewalk was fairly busy, this seemed to be a happening part of town on a Saturday night. You make your way to the theater's entrance. A poster for Breakfast at Tiffany's behind the glass display, it was just starting now. You'd heard of the movie but you didn't know much about it. The timing was too perfect though, you rush in and grab some tickets.
The lobby was full of older couples. You kept catching them glancing at the pair of you, maybe wondering why two teens would be here. You were probably half the age of most of the people here. Then you realize, they are looking at Elsie. Pointing her out, making comments, one couple even approaches you and tells you what a good looking pair you were. You turn to look at your little sister and you see why she is causing such a stir. You realize she looked a lot like the actress starring in this movie. She had a natural and effortless beauty that simply radiated off of her. She smiles bashfully as she notices you looking at her. Your heart skips a beat. Dear lord, if she wasn't your sister...
Worried thoughts kept trying to bubble up in your mind, to warn you, but you kept forcing them back down again.
You make it into the theater as the iconic shot of Audrey Hepburn staring into Tiffany's window comes on the screen. The place is actually fairly busy but you are able to grab some good seats. You both enjoy the story of the rash irrepressible young lady and her suave kept man love interest. You enjoy many good laughs at the lighthearted sections. You sit shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand. She would rest her head on your shoulder during the more serious scenes, her perfume was intoxicating.
As the rain soaked final scene ends you sit for a time to let most of the crowd file out. You weren't sure what happened next, just go home you guess. It didn't seem right somehow. El sits beside you quietly, probably having similar thoughts. You eventually make your way out of the rundown old theater.
As you leave you notice nearby there is a guy with a guitar playing for tips near a streetlight. As he sees the pair of you the sweet sound of an acoustic version of Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight fills the warm night air. You approach to watch him play. He's an old rough looking dude but he has a voice as smooth as silk and his playing is just as good. As you listen you feel Elsie at your side, the lyrics drift through your head.
I feel wonderful because I see the love light in your eyes. And the wonder of it all is that you just don't realize how much I love you.
You reach your hand around Elsie and pull her tight against you, she slips her arm around your waist. You can feel her gaze on you. Deep in your mind you know, you know without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest mistake you could ever make right now would be to look back at her. You turn and look down into her deep captivating brown eyes. As you stare into each other's souls the final lines of the song float around you.
And then I tell her, as I turn out the light. I say "My darling, you were wonderful tonight. Oh my darling, you were wonderful toniiiiight."
The performer finishes with a soft instrumental solo. You can't stop yourself from leaning in for a kiss, a long tender yearning kiss. As you pull back you both open your eyes once more, seeing each other's oh so familiar face in a whole new light. There were smiling older couples around you, touched by the display of blossoming love.
She says softly. "Do...do we have to go home Jesse?"
"No." You reply. You leave the musician some money and you both head toward the car.
