Chapter 6 by Nemo of Utopia Nemo of Utopia

Which Realm Do You Chose, What’s Its Government, And How Will You Gain Control??

The Kingdom of Junonia; Monarchy; And Edit History A Bit To Marry The Young King...

You settle on Junonia, its position as an Island decides you.

You can fortify the shoreline and make it relatively secure, and the huge island is already fairly pacified, so there is little risk of monsters trundling out of the wilderness to attack your holdings.

Then you turn your attention to a closer review of the nation's history....

The History of Junonia begins 105 years ago with the Conquests of King Arthur the Great. King Arthur United the feuding tribes of Elves, Dwarves, and Humans living in Junonia at the time, against the Goblins, Orcs, Trolls, Kobolds, and Dragons. Arthur The Great conquered the enemies of his empire, married the young Queen of Lioness when he was in his forties and she was only 13, but refrained from sharing her bed untill 5 years later at the insistence of the arch-magus Merlin.

Because Arthur heeded Merlin's warning they were delivered of twins, a son and a daughter, who grew up healthy and hale. Arthur's court was full of magic and accomplishment, and his children became mighty in the arts of both war and peace. Arthur died at the grand age of 88, 71 years ago. Since then three kings have ruled the mighty kingdom he forged, his son Ralyons I, his Grandson Ralyons II, (Scarce a babe in arms when the great king died,) and his great Grandson Uther II.

There has been strife in the kingdom, The Digers Rebellion, The Woodlot Insurrection, The March of the Trolls, The Swan Road Invasions by the barbarians of Malagor, but in the main, the kingdom has been peaceful.

Each of the kings of Junonia have married and had children later in life, but just recently this trend has been altered, King Uther II has, on the advice of the Arch-Wizard Nimue, chosen to seek a wife quite young compared to his forebears. Ascended to the throne at only 18 he is still scarce more than a BOY, but he wears the crown and all the servants of the gods agree that he is both ready to be King and ready to marry.

It is at this time that you decide to spend some of your remaining store of points and make a significant change to the history. Instead of King Uther II being in search of a wife you insert yourself into the story: you are now the newly married Queen of Junonia, and have Uther's ear. (Among other things.)

You review what this change has brought you, and are pleased to discover that you now have a number of new advantages, including having an income, a base of operations, and popular support. Conversely, there's some new disadvantages as well: jealous rivals who will seek to embarrass, inconvenience, and shame you; enemy agents who will try to kill you; restrictions on your behavior; and a vast increase in your monthly expenses*.
*(Your income more than covers it, but not by much.)

You look over the remaining options and find you can get some starting troops as the "Queen's Household/Queen's Guard", but are now restricted to hiring women, girls, and boys younger than 10*.
*(Or equivalent for Dwarves and Elves.)

You also have another interesting feature: troops choices are increased in cost by double, but "Heroines" are reduced by half, and the base troops amount required for buying them has been eliminated.

Looking over your "Heroine" options you find several who seem especially useful, but can only afford to get at most 3 right now if you want to have a respectable household/guard...

Dame Serra Victoria Hellsing:
This powerful Vampire Slayer is also a half-vampire herself. She comes with an increase in Religious connections but a decrease in your reputation for purity among the population.

Contessa Laurel De-Winter:
The Contessa is an accomplished assassin and spy. She comes with a strong advantage to your espionage abilities, but a penalty to your reputation for honesty and a small hit to your actual purity rating.

Dame Mary Angela Galena:
Raised among Dwarves, this young human woman is a skilled fighter and bodyguard. She grants better reputation in most areas with your Dwarven subjects, and can take on the important "Bodyguard" hero role, but costs you in many areas with your Elven subjects.

Kan'aelimil Rhyanae Mraenanea:
This older Elven woman has many of the same advantages and disadvantages as Dame Mary, above, but backwards. She also is a skilled 'atournae' and bodyguard, but would endear you to your Elven subjects while alienating the Humans and Dwarves. However, she also grants other advantages, including: connecting with the nobility, slightly reduced troops costs for Elven warriors, better diplomatic relations with a few other nations, and training in swordswomanship for both you and your troops. Her big downside is she costs about double any of the other heroines you can hire except Abbess Magdalena Von-Gotblieve, Baroness Astrid Helga Stoic, and Royace Ingred of Prokovea, who either match or exceed her.

Sister Alexis Kayla of Eltdown:
Another human, Sister Alexis will improve your reputation for piety and duty, especially with your human subjects: but will also place restrictions on your acceptable behaviors and cannot be married off to seal an alliance. She can fill the important role of "Confessor", something unusual in the heroines available to you right now.

Royace Ingred of Prokovea:
This Dwarven woman is one of the "Queens Under Mountain" of Junonia's Dwarves. She is the most expensive Heroine you can get, costing around three times average, but her advantages are immense, and her disadvantages less severe than most.

She increases your reputation with your Dwarven and Elven subjects in most areas, while not alienating your Human subjects at all. She is accomplished in the arts of both war and peace, and though she may not serve as a champion or bodyguard, she does eliminate the cost increase for Dwarven troops. She comes with the option of selecting one of four lesser heroines free, and, while she may not be married off to seal an alliance, she can serve as a marriage broker for other noble women of the kings court. Finally, she comes with her own spy network, and an increase in your income of several hundred crowns. Her big drawback of course is that she would be the only heroine you could buy right now...

Mistress Gayle Khol:
This is one of the few 'Heroines' available to you that is not actually a noble. She is also more a loyal villainess than a real hero. Mistress Gayle is a dominatrix and spy. She costs you a big hit to your reputation in almost every area and a serious blow to your purity, but the payoff is perhaps worth it. If you select her right now she can teach you how to establish dominance in your marriage, and basically control your husband King Uther. This benefit is only available now, while the history of the world is malleable, but if you want to be the one that wears the pants in your relationship, this might be the only way...

Abbess Magdalena Von-Gotblieve:
This is your other choice for a "Confessor" hero. The Abbess brings you advantage in the form of both religious and diplomatic connections, (especially with her homeland of the Gelempth Principalities across the North Sea,) the power of divine magic, and access to many new enchanting options; but her costs are significant. For one thing she is fairly notorious, and you take a penalty to your reputation in several areas, especially "Loyalty", (as she is a foreigner); for another, like Sister Alexis she restricts your acceptable behaviors in several ways, (though not as much as your other "Confessor" option); for a third, she costs about double what your other "Confessor" would; fourth, like her counterpart she cannot be bargained in marriage as part of an alliance; and lastly, she will cost you ten-percent of your income in upkeep due to required 'Tithing'. All that said she has a few other small advantages: one, she comes with a few servants of her own at no extra cost, including an apprentice heroine selected from one of five options; two, she gives you a toehold in the Gelempth Principalities should Junonia end up going to war with one of them; three, she is skilled in Exorcism, something none of your other Heroines have...

Ansrianna Amasal Aleanrae:
This woman the first of your only two good options for a "Court Magician" class heroine. She is an Elf of relatively tender years, but is already an accomplished summoner, enchantress, and battle mage. She allows you access to several types of bespelled items for your troops, and improves your reputation with both magicians and your Elven subjects, but costs you with your Dwarven subjects and has a higher than average upkeep cost.

Jharl Afhild Runes-Dotter:
Your other option for a "Court Magician" this Dwarven rune Smith is similar in many areas to her Elven counterpart. She is older, proportionally, and is a widow with two children, but knows only Rune magic. However, while she lacks the summoning and battle magic of the other option she makes up for it with impeccable knowledge of smithcraft, mining, and combat technique with the warhammer. Her drawbacks are the same as Amasal, but skewed towards her own race.

Baroness Astrid Helga Stoic:
And last, (but far from least,) we come to Baroness Astrid.

Baroness Astrid is a Dwarven woman of about 70 years of age, (Equivalent of 21 or so,) and she is unique in that she has almost no drawbacks other than her high cost. Baroness Astrid costs around double the average heroines hire price and upkeep, but she brings a lot to the table for it. She improves your reputation in most areas slightly; can train your troops in the arts of sword, axe, and warhammer combat; grants increased diplomatic relations with several other Dwarven Kingdoms; is of marriagable age; has negotiations skills which can slightly decrease hiring costs for future troops and heroines; and generates "Culture Points" for your court as a composer, whatever that means. Her drawbacks are only two: she slightly increases unrest among your Elven and Human subjects, (jealousy of her accomplishments,) and is twice as expensive as the average heroines hire price.

Which Heroine(s) Do You Pick?
