Tell your parents

“…telling our parents, baby!” Melody says with a smile. You get off the floor and head over to the bedroom while she grabs the phone and takes a seat on the couch. She puts it on speaker and dials her mom’s number.

“Let’s get the hard ones out of the way first!” She says. “What are you doing?”

“You’ll see!” You tell her as you dig through your dresser. After a few seconds, you find what you are looking for, stick it in your pocket and walk out into the living room. You look over at the couch and smile at the mother-to-be. You heart is beating so fast that it is practically humming. You sit on the end of the couch and put one leg out and the other on the floor. Melody scoots in between your legs and leans back into your chest just as someone answers the phone.

“Hello?” You hear a woman’s voice. Elaine, Melody’s mom answers the phone. Even though she’s in her mid-forties, she sounds like she could be Melody’s twin sister.

“Hi Mommy!!!” Melody shouts.

“Hi baby girl!!! How are you?” Her mom asks. You snicker a little, not loud enough for Elaine to hear but just enough that Melody gives you a playful smack.

“I’m okay. Are you sitting down?” Melody responds.

“This doesn’t sound good! Am I on speaker phone?” She asks her daughter.

“Yeah. And everything is fine. There’s just something important I need to tell you.” Your best friend tells her mother.

“Can this wait? Jack’s parents came over for lunch.” Elaine says.

“It can’t wait mom! I’m pregnant!!!” Melody tells her mother. You can clearly hear the sound of the phone hitting the floor on the other end.

“Does Keith know?” Elaine asks.

“No and he doesn’t need to know, cause he’s not the father!” Melody responds.

“Then who is? Was it some one-night stand? Does he know?” Her mother asks, clearly disappointed in her daughter.

“It started out as a one-night stand, but since he found out, he’s decided to stick around mom!” “In fact, he’s sitting here with me!!!” Melody leans back and kisses your neck as she says this. She taps you on the leg to let you know it’s your turn to talk.

“Hi Mom!!!” You say. It takes very little time for Elaine to realize who just greeted her.

“Jack, is that you? Is this some kind of joke?” She asks the two of you.

“Yes, it’s me Elaine, and no it’s not a joke.” You respond. “Your daughter and I are going to have a baby!”

“Oh my God!!! OH MY GOD!!!” Let me put you on speaker phone!!!” She says. “Okay, Jack, Melody, go ahead and repeat for everyone, what you just told me!”

“Hi Mom! Hi Dad! Hey Steve!!!” You say to your parents and Melody’s step-father.

“Hi kids!!! How are you?” You dad asks.

“I’m pregnant Charlie!!! And Jack is the father!!!” Melody blurts out. You swear you can hear a pin drop.

“And that’s not all!!!” You add as you reach into your pocket and pull out the little black box you grabbed from your dresser, open it, and hand it to Melody.

“What is…OH MY GOD!!!” She replies, sounding just like her mother a moment ago. “Jack just gave me an engagement ring with the biggest diamond I’ve ever seen!!!” She tells everyone.

“Melody, will you marry me?” You ask her as tears form in her eyes.

“YES!!!” She replies as she kisses you.

“Did this just happen?” You hear Steve ask on the other line.

“Yes Daddy!!! It did. Now Jack and I have something we…uh…need to do…err…take care of!!! We’ll talk to you guys later!!! We love you all!!!” Melody says.

“Congratulations, you two!!!” Your father says just before you hear the phone go dead.
